SK Hynix's HBM4 Roadmap and Dalian Retooling Give Investors Plenty to Weigh Before October 28
Published on 10/27/2026 at 19:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares jumped 5.2% on Tuesday, but the gain owes less to anything the chipmaker announced than to a friendlier mood across the semiconductor sector. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the planned IPO of AI developer Anthropic has lifted sentiment toward chip stocks, handing SK Hynix a tailwind that originates in the industry backdrop rather than in fresh operating news from the company itself.
That distinction matters for anyone holding the stock. Improved sentiment is running into unresolved financing questions and corporate decisions still waiting in the wings. Today's lift does not answer how SK Hynix intends to fund expansion or reward shareholders.
A Product Roadmap Takes Shape
Korean media reports on Tuesday put an operating milestone in focus: SK Hynix is reportedly targeting mass production and shipment of eight-layer HBM4 to Nvidia in the second quarter of 2027. The report is not a confirmed supply commitment, but the timeline offers a more concrete view of the future business than the as-yet unconfirmed special dividend.
For valuation purposes, the HBM4 plans provide a longer-term reference point. What matters is not only the intended launch but also HBM revenue, pricing and order intake, along with the outlook for the coming year. The stated schedule describes a goal; it proves neither revenue already booked nor execution completed.

Dalian Retooling Adds Another Piece
Alongside the HBM4 ambitions, SK Hynix is pursuing modernization of its Chinese manufacturing. Reuters reported on October 21 that the company plans to convert its Dalian plant to NAND products with at least 240 layers, up from the 192 layers the site currently produces. The capacity upgrade and the Solidigm financing together form the concrete corporate backdrop for the stock, separate from the broader AI euphoria carrying the sector today.
Solidigm's Listing Put on Ice
On Friday, SK Hynix suspended its review of a US IPO for subsidiary Solidigm. According to Reuters, the company cited market volatility and the share price performance. At the same time, SK Hynix said it continues to examine financing options for Solidigm's expansion.
The search for capital is therefore not over. What was paused was the review of the listing, not the hunt for funding, and the company named no alternative financing commitment. The decision shows that today's market mood and long-term capital planning have to be viewed separately.
Record Expectations Set the Bar
The next real test comes on October 28, when SK Hynix reports third-quarter 2026 results followed by a conference call. Analysts polled by FactSet and cited by MarketWatch expect record revenue of 98.202 trillion Won for the quarter.
Operating profit is forecast at 76.995 trillion Won, with net profit seen at 61.418 trillion Won. Both figures are projections, not published results. The bar reaches well beyond a mere stabilization of the business, and how SK Hynix describes demand and its own outlook will shape how the HBM4 story is read. A product roadmap alone does not settle those questions.

The Dividend Question Remains Open
Reports of a possible special dividend have stoked additional expectations. Dong-A Ilbo wrote of considerations for a payout of roughly 16 trillion Won, with proceeds from a sale of the Kioxia stake named as a possible source of funding. SK Hynix has confirmed neither the amount nor the proposal.
Yesterday the company said only that it is reviewing measures for shareholder returns, with nothing yet decided. Additional measures are to be presented alongside the quarterly figures, subject to a board resolution. The separation is essential: a payout concerns how capital is used, while the HBM4 plans concern future operations. Today's share price gain anticipates neither a special dividend nor a solution to the Solidigm financing.
