The arithmetic of leverage is unforgiving, and on Monday SK Hynix shareholders felt its full force. The South Korean memory-chip maker's stock tumbled more than 8 percent to 1.579.000 won, erasing a meaningful chunk of Friday's historic advance — a move that had little to do with the company's fundamentals and everything to do with a blow-up in a New York hedge fund.

The collapse of Situational Awareness, the AI-focused fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, set off a chain reaction that rippled across Seoul's trading floors. The fund, which managed $45 billion at the start of the month, saw its assets shrink to roughly $10 billion by Thursday after its leveraged bets — built with up to 400 percent leverage — went sour. When positions in SK Hynix, Sandisk, Bloom Energy and Nebius Group each fell more than 30 percent within a month, margin calls forced the fund to unload its entire equity book at a discount to Ken Griffin's Citadel.

Those forced sales may have prevented a broader market meltdown, but they left investors nursing fresh anxiety about similarly geared funds holding memory-chip exposure. The knock-on effect was immediate: Samsung Electronics shed around 8 percent in Monday morning trading, while the Kospi index dropped 4.88 percent to 6.273 points — a stark reversal just one session after closing with a record surge of nearly 18 percent.

A Market Caught Between Euphoria and Panic

The whiplash is becoming a defining feature of Korea's semiconductor trade. SK Hynix had closed Friday at 1.718.000 won after one of the most violent upswings in its corporate history, only to give back a substantial portion of those gains within hours of the opening bell on Monday. The stock now sits roughly 13 percent lower on the week and about 35 percent below where it traded a month ago.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Analysts are framing the pullback as a technical correction rather than a fundamental deterioration. "The sharp decline owes less to concerns about a boom peak than to an excessive concentration of investments ahead of the anticipated memory-chip boom," said Lee Jong-wook of Samsung Securities. Han Ji-young at Kiwoom Securities pointed to room for short-term profit-taking after Friday's historic jump.

The volatility has been amplified by a wave of newly launched leveraged single-stock products tied to SK Hynix and Samsung, which market participants say are driving outsized moves in both directions. One asset manager described the Korean market as suffering from a kind of bipolar disorder, swinging almost overnight between panic and euphoria — a characterization that captures the past several weeks with uncomfortable accuracy.

Positioning, Not Fundamentals

Several domestic brokerages responded to the turbulence by trimming their price targets. Shinhan Investment & Securities cut its SK Hynix target from 4,2 million won to 2,7 million won, while Samsung Securities lowered its own from 3,5 million to 3 million won.

Yet the underlying picture remains intact, according to multiple observers. Morgan Stanley upgraded Korean equities to "overweight" following July's 22.2 percent correction, citing an attractive entry point after speculative positions were flushed out, with a long-term Kospi target of 9.000 points. A market strategist told CNBC that while Friday-style gains shouldn't be expected as the norm, the recovery itself may have room to run given how bearish positioning had become. A semiconductor analyst at Futurum Group added that the recent rally reflects growing confidence in the ongoing AI investment cycle rather than a fundamental re-rating.

Major customers including Google, Apple, Amazon and Meta remain committed to their memory-chip investment plans, which could support results once the market stops interpreting forced selling as a sign of structural weakness.

The Structural Vulnerability Beneath the Surface

Monday's slide also exposed a deeper fragility in Korea's equity market. Households have taken on significant debt to pile into the country's dominant tech names, meaning any shift in institutional positioning reverberates disproportionately through the entire index.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The scale of the swings is perhaps best illustrated by the chart. SK Hynix marked a 52-week high of 2.987.000 won as recently as late June. Since then, the stock has lost more than 47 percent of its value — yet it still trades roughly 33 percent above its 200-day average of 1.187.000 won.

For all the recent carnage, the stock remains up more than 140 percent year-to-date. That figure puts Monday's setback in perspective, even as it underscores just how extreme the moves have been in both directions.

Notably, before the sale to Citadel, roughly two-thirds of Situational Awareness's portfolio consisted of publicly traded equities, both long and short. The remainder sat in private holdings, led by its Anthropic stake — a position a fund spokesperson said was not for sale. The fund's core AI investment thesis appears to remain intact, even as its leveraged public-market book has been unwound.
