SoftBank Group's board approved an interim dividend of 5.50 JPY per share on Friday, with the total payout amounting to 31,346 million JPY. Shareholders of record as of September 30 will receive the distribution on December 2, 2026.

The same day brought word that the group had wrapped up the early redemption of its euro-denominated senior notes, a step actually completed on Thursday. The bonds carried a 2.875% coupon and had been due January 6, 2027. None of that issue now remains outstanding.

Credit Insurance at a Four-Year Peak

Those housekeeping items landed against a less comfortable backdrop. Bloomberg reported Thursday on concerns that rising borrowing costs could erode the returns on SoftBank's debt-financed AI investments, pointing to the pressure on CoreWeave's bonds as evidence of the financing risks involved. Earnings from major US technology companies did little to calm investors' nerves, according to the report.

Five-year credit default swaps on SoftBank widened to 432 basis points on Tuesday, the highest level in nearly four years, media reports said. Coverage linked the move to anxiety over AI funding as well as reports of a possible large acquisition.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank Group?

Reuters reported on October 16 that SoftBank is weighing a purchase of Allied Universal from its owners, in a potential transaction that would value the US security services provider at roughly $18 billion. Talks are at an early stage, with neither a final decision nor a price settled.

The Execution Risk Behind the Headlines

Capital needs are only half the story. Delays in building a data center campus for OpenAI could trigger substantial rent-free periods, according to the Wall Street Journal and SB Energy's IPO filings. The planned Ohio site is designed for 10 gigawatts, to be powered by a 9.2-gigawatt gas plant that SB Energy neither owns nor operates — meaning delivery depends on energy infrastructure outside its own control.

The lease terms give the schedule real financial weight. For each day of delay, OpenAI receives one free base rent day; after 90 days, that becomes two per day. A full year of slippage would add up to 640 rent-free days, the report said. Such concessions could weigh on later rental income, turning construction progress into a question of project economics rather than mere operations.

The contractual obligations described sit with SB Energy and should not be equated with a direct payment obligation of SoftBank Group itself. Even so, the arrangement adds a risk factor for a financed company. No data centers have opened yet, and the capital raise is not complete — leaving investors to weigh pending operational tests against an equally open capital markets date.

SoftBank Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

OpenAI Stake Already Consumes Billions

SoftBank has invested a total of $64.6 billion in OpenAI and says it holds about 13%. The final $10 billion tranche was funded from bond proceeds. The OpenAI stake and the financing of infrastructure companies are separate commitments, yet both raise the same investor question: how reliably can these ambitious expansion plans be delivered economically?

The next scheduled checkpoint is SoftBank's half-year results on November 10, 2026. Until then, SB Energy offers a concrete yardstick for risk assessment — raising capital is only part of the job; dependable construction and operations must follow.
