SpaceX's $500 Billion Target Hinges on Turning AI Capacity Into Committed Revenue

SpaceX shares climbed 9.4% yesterday, riding a broader rebound in AI and technology names — but the day's real news lay in the numbers Elon Musk attached to the business behind the ticker. Musk said annualized revenue could probably exceed $500 billion by December 2027, a figure he framed as a best estimate and explicitly not a promise.

That caveat matters, because the forecast measures something different from what most analysts model. It describes the revenue pace annualized at the end of that period, not a full-year total. The analyst consensus, drawn from 37 estimates, puts full-year 2027 revenue at roughly $180 billion. One number describes the speed SpaceX hopes to reach by year-end; the other describes expected proceeds across the entire year.

A Nearer Yardstick

The gap between those two figures is less telling than the path connecting them. A high closing run-rate demands a different growth trajectory than steady performance over twelve months — revenue has to accelerate sharply as capacity comes online. Musk's vision can therefore be tested much sooner: for the fourth quarter of 2026, he expects revenue roughly 70% higher than in the preceding quarter. Both of those figures are expectations, not reported results.

Government contracts, meanwhile, will account for less than 10% of quarterly revenue, according to Musk. That disclosure landed a day after media reports had tied a share-price slide following the elections to worries about a possible review of government contracts, with planned data centers in Texas also drawing investor attention. Reuters attributed the subsequent recovery to the broader bounce in AI stocks after earlier losses.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

ARK funds used Thursday's selloff to add to positions, buying $48.7 million worth of SpaceX stock, according to a media report published yesterday. The report did not disclose the rationale behind the investment decision.

The Engine Behind the Forecast

What underpins the $500 billion ambition is a shift in how SpaceX earns money: the company is increasingly renting out AI computing power. That opens enormous growth potential — provided the infrastructure buildout converts into customers who keep paying.

The AI segment generated $7.56 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2026. Anthropic accounted for 34.5% of SpaceX's total revenue in that period, making it the largest customer, Bloomberg reported. Such concentration cuts both ways. A single large buyer can fill new capacity quickly, but it also raises the risk if that demand retreats or contractual exit options become economically relevant. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic can exit its contracts from the start of 2027 with 90 days' notice. Alongside technical delivery, customer retention now sits at the heart of the growth story.

Capital intensity is the other side of the ledger. Chief financial officer Bret Johnsen expects capital expenditure of $35 billion to $40 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026 — substantial outlays committed while the hoped-for incremental revenue has yet to materialize. The valuation question is therefore not only how fast revenue climbs, but how much capital that growth absorbs.

Chips, Networks and a Boardroom Departure

SpaceX is also pushing into terrestrial mobile communications. On Wednesday the company announced an agreement with Qualcomm under which its Dragonwing platforms will support Starlink Mobile's ground-based base stations, part of a planned nationwide 5G network in the United States. The multi-year deal covers chips and software for tens of thousands of cell sites, with rollout expected to begin in 2027 — selecting the platforms does not yet amount to a completed network. Media reports on Thursday flagged both the investment required for the terrestrial infrastructure and the competitive challenge posed by established mobile carriers.

SpaceX at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

On the governance front, CNBC reported yesterday that Google executive Donald Harrison has stepped down from SpaceX's board of directors. Google said at the same time that it would continue the long-standing partnership — a relationship that matters to SpaceX as long as its AI expansion depends on deep-pocketed partners.

Musk's forecast sets a demanding bar. Rising revenue, durable customer relationships and economically utilized computing capacity are what would give the new order of magnitude a solid foundation.
