Suffolk Wildfire: Emergency Services Battle One of County's Largest Blazes

A major incident has been declared at Dunwich Heath after a wildfire spread to cover 150 hectares — an area roughly equivalent to 210 football pitches. More than 120 firefighters and 18 engines are tackling the blaze, with a helicopter deployed to drop seawater on the affected terrain. The fire, which began on Wednesday, is expected to require at least another 24 to 48 hours of intensive response. Housing Minister Angela Rayner expressed gratitude for the efforts of firefighters on the ground. Meanwhile, Green Party leader Carla Denyer has called for a Cobra meeting to address the escalating wildfire situation across the country.

Nuclear Site Remains Safe

Despite the fire's proximity to critical energy infrastructure, officials confirmed that the Sizewell B nuclear power plant is not at risk. EDF, the operator of the facility, stated that operations remain unaffected and continue as normal.

Chief Fire Officer Lacey further clarified that the fire is not expected to spread toward either the existing Sizewell B site or the planned Sizewell C location. Fire crews remain on alert to protect the coastal energy hub as they work to bring the surrounding heathland under control.

Dry Conditions Fuel Record Wildfire Season

The wildfire follows a period of extreme weather, with temperatures reaching into the 30s°C and Suffolk receiving just 2% of its average July rainfall. Meteorological data shows this month has been the driest in 190 years for Wales, while England has seen nearly 400 wildfires in July alone — the busiest month on record for such incidents.

Environmental groups have raised alarms over the long-term ecological damage. The RSPB noted that the fire has impacted the Minsmere nature reserve, describing the destruction as unprecedented. Experts suggest the habitat may take more than a decade to fully recover.
