Super Micro's $60 Billion Quarter Puts Skeptics on the Back Foot — For Now

Super Micro's Q4 blowout and record $60B backlog fuel 26% weekly rally, but analysts question margin sustainability despite $72B FY2027 guidance.

When a company's quarterly guidance lands more than 20 percent above the highest Wall Street estimate, the usual rules of engagement tend to go out the window. Super Micro Computer managed exactly that on August 11, when it unveiled a fiscal 2027 revenue forecast of $65 billion to $72 billion against a consensus sitting at just $54.4 billion — a gap wide enough to force even the most cautious sell-side desks to sit up and take notice.

The numbers behind that projection are striking by any measure. The server maker closed its fiscal fourth quarter with revenue of $11.1 billion, up from $10.2 billion in the prior quarter and $5.8 billion a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.70, comfortably ahead of the $0.92 analysts had penciled in. Net income for the quarter reached $1.178 billion, a dramatic leap from $483 million in Q3 and $195 million in the year-ago period. For the full fiscal year 2026, revenue totaled $39.1 billion versus $22.0 billion the year before, with net income of $2.2 billion, or $3.26 per diluted share.

The margin story is where things get genuinely interesting. Gross margin vaulted from 9.9 percent in the prior quarter to 17.5 percent — or 17.6 percent on a non-GAAP basis, up from 9.6 percent. Management attributes the improvement to a richer mix of enterprise customers and its proprietary Data Center Building Block Solutions. Whether that marks a structural shift or a one-off product-mix windfall is precisely the question dividing the Street right now.

A Backlog That Demands Attention

The headline-grabbing guidance rests on an order book that has swollen to record proportions. Super Micro says it booked more than $60 billion in new orders during the fiscal fourth quarter alone, pushing the total backlog to an all-time high. That figure — roughly five times quarterly revenue — suggests demand for AI infrastructure shows no signs of cooling, even as questions linger about the durability of the current capex supercycle.

For the current quarter, management sees revenue of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.01 to $1.10. The consensus had been looking for around $12 billion on the top line, with even the most bullish individual estimate stuck at $13.3 billion. The earnings forecast similarly overshoots the $0.74 consensus.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Super Micro Computer?

Rally Meets Reluctance

The market's initial response was emphatic. Shares closed Thursday at $39.16, up 4.1 percent on the day and roughly 26 percent higher on the week. The stock now trades about 30 percent above its 50-day moving average of $30.20, with an RSI north of 70 — territory that typically signals a short-term overbought condition.

The analyst reaction, however, tells a more nuanced story. Needham & Company stands alone in its conviction, reiterating a "Buy" rating with a $46 price target on August 12 and pointing to sustained demand for AI solutions. Elsewhere, the upgrades came with hedges attached. Wedbush lifted its target from $34 to $40 but held the line at "Neutral." Citigroup moved from $33 to $39, also maintaining a neutral stance. BofA Securities was the most restrained, nudging its target from $28 to $33 while keeping an "Underperform" rating and questioning whether the margin strength can persist beyond a favorable product mix.

That divergence captures the central tension in Super Micro's story: the growth trajectory is no longer in dispute, but the quality and sustainability of that growth remain very much open questions.

Capital, Compliance, and Lingering Risk

Behind the operational momentum sits a balance sheet that has been aggressively fortified. In June, the company raised gross proceeds of $7.0 billion through a capital raise comprising 45,454,545 shares at $27.50 each and 75,000,000 depositary shares at $50 each, representing an interest in a 7.0 percent Series A mandatory convertible preferred stock. An additional ATM program of up to $1.25 billion provides further flexibility.

The legal and regulatory overhang, meanwhile, has not disappeared. Super Micro confirmed an ongoing board review related to export-control transactions, following reports of alleged server diversions to China. In March, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed charges against three former individuals connected to the company — including co-founder Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw — over the alleged rerouting of AI servers equipped with restricted Nvidia chips to China. The company itself has not been charged. Separately, Taiwanese authorities searched Super Micro's local office in late June as part of an investigation into alleged smuggling by third parties, again without charging the company.

Add to that the routine but notable insider activity: CFO David Weigand and Chief Accounting Officer Kenneth Cheung both vested or exercised restricted stock units on August 10 at $31.46 per share — standard compensation-related moves that carry no signal about management's operational outlook.

For now, the bulls have the momentum, the order book, and the margin trajectory on their side. But with valuation stretched, regulatory questions unresolved, and several major banks openly skeptical about margin durability, the debate over Super Micro is far from settled. The next few quarters will determine whether this is the beginning of a new chapter or the peak of the cycle.
