Swedish Union Escalates Tesla Dispute With New Blockades Across Six Cities

A simmering labor conflict between Swedish trade union IF Metall and Tesla is about to intensify once again. On August 13, workers will mount blockades at six separate locations, reigniting a fight that has been dragging on for months.
The targeted facilities span Malmö, Umeå, Uppsala, Upplands Väsby, Segeltorp, and Huddinge. At the heart of the standoff remains a single demand: a collective bargaining agreement with TM Sweden AB, Tesla's Swedish subsidiary. The American automaker has consistently refused to sign one.

Solidarity, however, isn't universal among Tesla's Swedish workforce. One employee who has been on strike since the conflict first erupted says he'll break ranks this time. His reasoning: he feels used. There are also reports of members handing in their union cards. A long-time member cited a loss of faith in the leadership's approach as the reason for leaving. IF Metall declined to comment on individual defections.
A Broader Industry Under Strain
The Tesla battle is playing out against a wider backdrop of turbulence in the auto sector. In Germany, IG Metall's district leader Barbara Resch sounded the alarm in August over what she called a structural crisis. She flatly rejected any extension of working hours without corresponding pay.
Over at Mercedes-Benz, tensions boiled over when management postponed bonus payments and floated the idea of a 40-hour week at unchanged salaries. Worker representatives responded with an open letter to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, voicing criticism of planned pension reforms and demanding a more dependable industrial strategy from the government. The sector had already shed more than 32,000 jobs by the end of 2025.

On the supply side, a legal dispute with Texas-based supplier Angstrom threatens to halt Cybertruck production. Angstrom is demanding an additional $250,000 per week and, according to Tesla, is withholding essential tooling. With roughly 700 components missing, a production shutdown could come swiftly. Elon Musk, for his part, dismissed rumors of a Giga Shanghai sale or a SpaceX merger as baseless speculation.
