Take-Two's Split Screen: Record GTA VI Purchase Intent Meets a Trimmed 2028 Profit Outlook
Published on 10/29/2026 at 05:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deTake-Two Interactive heads into its next earnings test with two very different signals in hand. On one side sits the strongest demand indicator the market research firm Circana has ever recorded for a game: 29% of US console and PC players say they intend to buy GTA VI. On the other, BofA Securities has trimmed its price target on the stock to $330 from $368, citing lower profit estimates for fiscal 2028 — while keeping its Buy rating intact.
The stock slipped 2.8% in the latest session. That move should not be read as a verdict on either development; a single trading day offers no reliable causal link to an analyst decision or a survey release. What matters more for investors is the gap between the two data points and what each actually proves.
Interest Is Not the Same as Sales
The Circana figure comes with an important caveat. The 29% includes PC players, yet GTA VI has so far been announced for consoles only. The survey therefore cannot be mapped directly onto launch-unit sales. It measures appetite, not transactions — and the distinction runs through the entire bull case.
The console launch is scheduled for November 19. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella expects the demand to spill over into hardware, accessories and gaming subscriptions, with some consumers likely buying a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series console specifically for the title. Circana anticipates corresponding tailwinds for software sales and hardware upgrades in the fourth quarter. None of that constitutes a sales guarantee for Take-Two.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Take-Two Interactive?
A Predecessor That Sets a High Bar
The longer-term case has a reference point: GTA V has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide since 2013, and in the US it ranked among the best-selling games every year through 2025. That track record explains the lofty expectations — but it does not prove the new title will reach and retain a comparable audience.
Take-Two's own guidance gives the optimism a hard number to aim at. The company expects net bookings of $8 billion to $8.2 billion for fiscal 2027. The purchase-intent survey supports the demand assumptions behind that forecast without confirming it. How much stated interest converts into actual purchases — and how well those buyers are later monetized — is the open question. BofA sees a potential new GTA Online mode as an additional revenue driver and considers a launch in the first calendar quarter of 2027 possible, though no release date has been confirmed.
The 2028 Number Behind the Target Cut
BofA's adjustment shifts attention well past the near-term release calendar. The bank lowered its price target on Tuesday while reaffirming its Buy recommendation, pointing to reduced earnings estimates for fiscal 2028. That combination deserves a careful reading: the direction of the recommendation stays positive, but its arithmetic foundation has become more conservative.
Investors should keep the two layers apart. A Buy rating is the analyst's final verdict; the cut to profit estimates shows that a key input to that verdict has deteriorated. Both can be true at once. A lower price target alone is not a sufficient argument against the stock — the real risk lies in further downward revisions to the underlying expectations, and in whether the latest adjustment proves a one-off recalibration or the first step in a sustained series of cuts.
November 9 Is the Next Fixed Marker
Take-Two announced roughly two weeks ago that it will report second-quarter results for fiscal 2027 on November 9 after the market close. The report covers the quarter ended September 30.
Take-Two Interactive at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
That release will be judged primarily on whether it builds confidence in the earnings trajectory — not on whether it triggers a favorable short-term price reaction. A convincing quarterly print would help, but its bearing on fiscal 2028 depends on what the accompanying company commentary actually allows investors to conclude. Between an imminent quarterly report and a profit estimate for a later fiscal year there is a considerable distance; a single set of results can support or undermine the long-range expectation without settling it.
An Unconfirmed Footprint
Alongside the demand survey, the technical scale of the release is drawing attention. PlayStation Game Size reported yesterday a 210 GB download for the standard edition on PS5. Rockstar has not officially confirmed that figure, and the size of the Xbox version is likewise unconfirmed. Pre-loading is said to begin on November 12. None of this yields reliable conclusions about Take-Two's sales.
For investors, the record purchase intent remains the stronger signal. Whether it turns into the expected business success will be decided by actual purchases and later engagement — and, on the earnings front, by whether the numbers on November 9 hold up the reduced expectations rather than inviting another round of cuts.
