The German telecoms group is pressing ahead with its strategy of buying scale rather than building it from scratch, announcing the acquisition of two Polish broadband operators from Macquarie Asset Management. The roughly €1bn deal for Fiberhost and Inea, unveiled on Monday, would hand T-Mobile Polska a fully integrated offering spanning mobile, fixed-line and television services.

Fiberhost brings a fibre network reaching 1.4 million households, while Inea contributes around 300,000 existing customers. The transaction, which remains subject to approval from Polish competition authorities, is expected to close by the end of 2026. That timeline reflects the regulatory scrutiny the deal will face, though the strategic logic is straightforward: T-Mobile Polska has long been a mobile-first operator reliant on partners for fixed-line infrastructure, and these acquisitions plug that gap with an established network and an attached customer base.

Chief executive Tim Höttges signalled the direction of travel at the half-year results in early August, arguing that the group needed to accelerate the monetisation of its fibre infrastructure. Buying a network with customers already on it short-circuits the capital-intensive process of organic build-out, a rationale that also underpins the separate Fairplay agreement announced on 7 August to speed up broadband expansion in Germany. Both moves fit the same playbook: scale the fibre business faster, whether through construction or acquisition.

The Polish purchase arrives amid a broadly positive stretch for the Bonn-based group. The expansion of its share buyback programme, which Höttges framed as a pure investment decision, came roughly two weeks ago, and the stock has since gained 1.3 per cent. The shares closed on Tuesday at €29.00, up 7.7 per cent over the past 30 days, though still 16 per cent below the 52-week high of €34.35 reached at the end of February.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Operationally, the second quarter of 2026 underscored the group's momentum. Net revenue came in at €29.9bn with organic growth of 3.3 per cent year on year, while adjusted EBITDA after leasing reached €11.8bn, ahead of the €11.7bn consensus. That performance prompted management to lift its full-year guidance: free cash flow after leasing is now expected at around €20.0bn, up from the previous projection of more than €19.8bn, with adjusted EBITDA targeted at roughly €47.5bn, a 6 per cent increase at constant exchange rates.

The domestic market continues to deliver, with EBITDA growing for the 39th consecutive quarter. Mobile service revenues rose 2.4 per cent and broadband revenues 1.9 per cent, while fibre net additions reached 161,000 in the quarter, up 18 per cent year on year. The accompanying loss of 20,000 traditional broadband customers reflects the expected migration to faster networks.

Across the Atlantic, T-Mobile US generated its own headlines in early August when it emerged that plans for a potential merger with Deutsche Telekom worth around $300bn were no longer supported. Shareholder concerns and regulatory hurdles were cited as reasons, with institutional minority investors at the US arm having already signalled resistance. The operational picture, however, remains robust: organic EBITDA grew 9.6 per cent in the first half, postpaid accounts added 0.5 million, and US GAAP service revenue rose 8.9 per cent.

Elsewhere, the group's Industrial AI Cloud in Munich, operated jointly with NVIDIA and running 10,000 GPUs, is at full capacity, and Ookla awarded the company all eleven available network quality accolades. Investors now look to the AI Investor Day on 5 October and third-quarter results on 5 November, with the Polish antitrust review likely to remain a key watchpoint in the interim.
