Deutsche Telekom Surges on €1B Polish Fiber Deal, Tops DAX Momentum

The German telecoms giant has spent August doing something unusual: behaving like a growth stock. A 9.6 percent surge in its share price over the past 30 trading days has put Deutsche Telekom at the top of the DAX momentum rankings, an unfamiliar position for a company more commonly associated with steady dividends than explosive upside. The catalyst for that strength has been building for weeks, and on Monday it crystallised into a concrete strategic move.

The company agreed to acquire Polish fixed-line, broadband and TV operators Fiberhost and Inea from Macquarie Asset Management for €1 billion, a deal that would transform T-Mobile Polska into a fully integrated provider offering mobile, fixed-line and television services under one roof. Completion is expected by the end of the year, subject to clearance from Polish competition authorities. The acquisition marks a notable shift in the Polish market's balance of power: T-Mobile Polska has long been a mobile-first operator reliant on partners for its fixed-line offering, whereas Fiberhost and Inea bring an existing fibre network with its own customer base into the fold.

The timing is no accident. Chief executive Tim Höttges signalled at the half-year results in early August that the group needed to accelerate the monetisation of its fibre infrastructure. Buying a network that already has customers attached short-circuits the slow, capital-intensive process of building one from scratch. The Polish deal also sits alongside a Fairplay agreement announced on 7 August with a partner to speed up domestic network expansion — two prongs of the same strategy to scale the fibre business both organically and through acquisitions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

That strategic clarity has been rewarded in the market. The stock closed on Tuesday at €29.00, up 7.7 percent over the preceding 30 days and roughly 1.3 percent higher since Höttges framed the expanded share buyback programme as a pure investment decision two weeks ago. The Polish acquisition demonstrates that the group can return capital to shareholders and still find room for strategic purchases. Still, the shares remain 16 percent below their 52-week high of €34.35, reached at the end of February — a reminder that the recent rally has yet to recapture the ground lost earlier in the year.

The momentum story, however, extends beyond the corporate activity. T-Mobile US continues to gain market share in North America and supplies the lion's share of the group's free cash flow, while the European fibre rollout is beginning to pay off as falling investment requirements meet growing subscriber numbers. That combination of stable earnings and tangible price appreciation is rare for a defensive dividend stock, and it has propelled the shares to the top of the DAX's 30-day performance table, ahead of Deutsche Bank at 9.4 percent, Rheinmetall at 8.4 percent, Bayer at 7.1 percent and BASF at 6.0 percent.

The ranking, based on closing prices from 25 August and measured against levels exactly one month earlier, reflects relative strength rather than valuation judgements. For Telekom specifically, the interest-rate environment remains the key vulnerability — as a capital-intensive business, the company is sensitive to rising refinancing costs. But as long as rate concerns stay in the background, the stock benefits from a rare combination of defensive income and genuine price momentum.

For investors, the focus now shifts to integration. If the merger of Fiberhost and Inea with T-Mobile Polska proceeds smoothly, the result will be a Polish operator capable of serving both mobile and fixed-line customers from a single platform. Until the competition clearance lands and the deal closes at year-end, attention will likely remain on the group's ability to keep executing on its existing operations — and on whether the August momentum can survive contact with the realities of the fourth quarter.
