Swiss banking giant UBS has disclosed a reportable stake in Augsburg-based gearbox specialist Renk Group, according to a voting rights notification. As of the September 16 reference date, the institution held 5.08% of voting rights, split between a direct 1.10% position and a further 3.98% held through financial instruments.

The disclosure landed alongside a sharp move in the share price. Renk stock climbed 5.5% on Friday to close at EUR 42.39, a rally that followed a fresh buy recommendation from Goldman Sachs. The US investment bank raised its rating on the drive-technology maker from "Neutral" to "Buy" and set a price target of EUR 65.

A Floor After Months of Weakness

The upgrade brought visible relief to a stock that had been under pressure for much of the summer. On Wednesday, the shares had touched a new twelve-month low of EUR 40.91. Just three weeks earlier, management had announced a significant production ramp-up in tank transmissions, yet a broad consolidation across European defence names kept a lid on valuations through late summer.

The stock's troubles had not gone unnoticed on the sell side. Back on August 19, JPMorgan analyst David Perry flagged the consolidation potential in the defence and drive-technology sector in an industry study, identifying the Augsburg company as a potentially attractive takeover candidate. Debate over the group's strategic positioning has trailed the shares in the weeks since.

Ownership Shift Draws Institutional Attention

The UBS filing marks the second signal of heavyweight institutional interest in quick succession. By crossing the 5% reporting threshold, the Swiss group has established itself as a significant shareholder — a development market participants read as a confidence vote after a stretch of skeptical trading.

Renk's recent trading history underscores how welcome that vote was. The stock had set a 52-week low of EUR 39.28 on September 17, only to reverse course as both the stake disclosure and the analyst upgrade hit the tape.

Record Order Book Underpins the Bull Case

Supporting the improved sentiment is the company's operating performance. Alongside its half-year figures and a confirmed outlook, management reported a record order backlog of EUR 7.4 billion last Wednesday. Order intake rose 29.7% to EUR 1.2 billion in the first six months of the year.

The top line also advanced. Revenue for the first half of 2026 climbed 2.7% to EUR 637 million, while adjusted operating profit reached just over EUR 98 million. Military demand in particular is keeping production capacity booked out for many quarters ahead — the order intake of nearly EUR 1.2 billion pushed the total backlog to its mid-year record. The gearbox maker had already reported the strongest start to a year in its corporate history in the first quarter.

Guidance and Expansion Plans on Track

For the full year 2026, the executive board continues to target revenue above EUR 1.5 billion, with adjusted operating profit projected in a range of EUR 255 million to EUR 285 million. Against a market capitalization of EUR 4.07 billion, Goldman Sachs' positive verdict now offers investors a concrete signal that a bottom may be forming.

In parallel, management is pressing ahead with the expansion of its international business. The transaction is scheduled to close in the fourth quarter.
