UBS's 70-Dollar Silver Call Rests on AI Demand Outweighing Margin Calls and Solar Cutbacks

Silver's spot of bother has little to do with the metal's own story. The COMEX front-month contract settled Friday at $53.96 an ounce, down 5.6% on the week, and the forces behind that slide — rising oil prices, forced selling to cover margin calls, worries about the Federal Reserve's next move — say more about the plumbing of investors' portfolios than about the long-run case for silver. UBS, for its part, is looking straight through the noise.

Giovanni Staunovo's team at the bank expects the price to reach $70.00 an ounce by December 2026, $75.00 by mid-2027 and $80.00 by September of that year. The forecast is explicitly conditional on short-term selling pressure persisting for now; it describes a recovery that has yet to begin, not a trend already in motion.

Two Clocks Running at Once

The tension in the market is between a near-term liquidity squeeze and a longer-term physical one. Media reports linked the latest leg lower to weakness in US technology and AI stocks, which triggered margin calls and forced investors to raise cash by selling silver. That kind of selling is driven by portfolio needs elsewhere, not by any reassessment of the metal's prospects.

Energy markets added their own weight. Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and risks to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil higher, feeding inflation fears and reinforcing expectations that US interest rates will stay elevated for longer. Higher financing costs and weaker industrial activity are both named by UBS as risks to its own thesis, alongside faster industrial substitution and a stronger dollar.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

The selling has hardly been a clean function of rates, either. Reuters reported that silver fell on Thursday even as US Treasury yields declined — a reminder that expectations, not just realized yields, drive prices.

The Scarcity Argument Has a Supply-Side Asterisk

Underpinning the bullish case is what UBS expects to be the sixth consecutive annual global supply deficit in 2026. The CME Group put a figure on it Tuesday: a projected shortfall of 46.3 million ounces for the year. Yet the exchange also flagged rising inventories and softening industrial demand from the solar sector as near-term headwinds — a useful distinction, since a deficit on the annual balance sheet does not mean immediately available metal is scarce. Higher stockpiles can blunt the price impact of an arithmetic gap.

Demand forecasts are not pointing one way either. Metals Focus expects industrial silver demand to fall 3% in 2026 to roughly 640 million ounces, according to an assessment published Thursday. The Silver Institute sees a decline of about 2%, with savings on silver used in photovoltaics doing most of the damage.

Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

UBS Global Wealth Management is betting on shifts within that demand rather than its overall level. Data centres, AI hardware, power grids and automotive electronics are expected to offset part of the solar cutback — which is why the interplay between applications matters more than any single end market. The AI-infrastructure story is a long-term argument; solar weakness is already weighing on the near-term outlook.

What Would Prove the Call Right

For investors, the dividing line runs between forced selling now and physical tightness later. The UBS projection gains credibility only if new applications genuinely absorb the solar savings; higher funding costs and softer industrial output could delay that offset. The expected deficit is an argument for higher prices, not evidence that a turnaround has arrived.
