UBS Trims Ballard Power Revenue Forecast for 2027 as Hydrogen Rollout Stalls
Published on 10/05/2026 at 00:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deAnalysts at UBS have sharply reduced their price target for Ballard Power Systems, cutting it from US$6.50 to US$2.15 while keeping a Neutral rating on the stock. The revision, reported in the media, reflects a slower-than-expected pace of project execution and hesitant adoption of fuel-cell technology among fleet customers.
The move lands as Ballard Power Systems unveiled Fleet360, a new service program aimed at North American fleet operators. The offering is designed for customers bringing the FCmove-HD+ fuel-cell unit into service, with the company seeking to accompany the modules across their entire lifecycle and reduce operational risk for users. At the heart of the package is FCcare+, a performance guarantee covering up to 250,000 miles of operation. The program also includes contractual response times for customer service and binding deadlines for resolving technical issues during day-to-day fleet operations.
Mid-Term Numbers Take a Haircut
Alongside the lower target, UBS trimmed its revenue estimate for fiscal 2027 to US$157 million from a previous US$180 million. The bank also cut its valuation multiple for the enterprise-value-to-sales ratio from 6.1 to 2.0. According to media reports, the adjustment reflected not only company-specific delays but also the broadly lower multiples across comparable names in the sector.
That mid-term downgrade carries weight. When market watchers cut their revenue expectations this visibly, the threshold to profitability shifts further into the future. Without reliable demand from fleet operators, fixed costs threaten to weigh on the business on a sustained basis. A genuine re-rating would require fundamental progress rather than hopes for political support programs.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ballard Power?
A Service Push Meets Deep Skepticism
Management is clearly aware of potential buyers' reservations, and the Fleet360 package — bundling fuel-cell performance warranties with technical support, secured spare-parts supply, training and retrofits — is a strategically coherent response. For hauliers and transit operators, maximum uptime is a precondition for even considering the costly switch to hydrogen, and performance commitments build confidence while lowering operational risk.
Even the best warranty program, however, does not solve the industry's core problem. As long as purchase costs remain high and hydrogen infrastructure stays patchy, fleet operators will shy away from large investments. A service contract alone does not fill an order book.
Market Skepticism Leaves Its Mark
The persistent doubt is plainly visible in the share price. Ballard Power closed Friday at EUR1.82, bringing its decline since the start of the year to 17 percent and leaving the stock trapped in a stubborn downtrend.
The balance of risks currently tilts clearly to the downside. UBS's drastic cut to revenue expectations underscores that broad commercialization is advancing far more slowly than hoped. Until Ballard Power reports genuine large-scale orders and stabilizes its eroding margin, any recovery attempts on the exchange are likely to fizzle out quickly. A cheap-looking valuation on its own does not justify an entry — and on that basis, a commitment hardly recommends itself to cautious investors at present.
