UBS has cut roughly 200 jobs in London, with Wealth Management and Investment Banking among the units affected, according to a Bloomberg report. The reduction surfaced on the same day the bank's broader efficiency drive came into sharper focus: cumulative gross cost savings reached USD 13.2 billion by the end of September, a figure UBS disclosed on 28 October.

Management expects to push that total to nearly USD 13.7 billion by the end of 2026 — a year-end target that remains an expectation rather than a delivered result.

A Profit Base and a Return Benchmark

The savings update landed alongside third-quarter 2026 numbers that give investors a fixed reference point. Net profit came in at USD 2.7 billion, with return on CET1 capital at 14.8%, according to company figures. That return line is the number to watch: if the capital UBS must hold rises, profit has to grow in step to keep the ratio from slipping.

RBC Capital Markets raised its price target for UBS on Friday to CHF 50 from CHF 44, keeping its "Outperform" rating. The higher mark therefore came without any change to the investment verdict itself.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying UBS?

Bern Holds the Other Half of the Equation

Whether that capital burden grows is now a political question. A proposal in the Swiss National Council could reduce the additional own-funds requirement UBS faces for its foreign subsidiaries — a bill the bank has put at USD 16 billion. Media reports suggest the potential relief is still an open question. The National Council's economic affairs committee is scheduled to take up the capital rules for UBS on 23 and 24 November.

A compromise already under discussion would apply a more conservative valuation method to foreign subsidiaries, which could lower that USD 16 billion figure. The positive case rests on the proposal winning political backing and actually delivering relief — support in the National Council is not assured.

Where the Bull and Bear Cases Diverge

For the optimistic reading, net new money offers the strongest support. Inflows in global wealth management hit USD 55.1 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to SRF. The test is whether those client assets can be converted into earnings — and, more importantly, whether a broader revenue base shows up in a higher return on capital while requiring less additional equity.

The cautious reading starts in the same place. A wealth management performance judged disappointing weighed on the first market reaction to the quarterly figures, according to media reports. Heavy inflows persuade investors mainly when the earnings line keeps pace. If the fresh client money contributes only modestly to profit while a large capital requirement persists, UBS would have to service a bigger equity base with the same earnings power.

What to Measure Next

Two linked variables therefore drive the investment case: operating results and the capital UBS must set aside to support them. Return on capital ties the pair together. Stable ratings and assessments for UBS Group and UBS Europe underpin the credit-quality picture, but the share price will likely turn on whether the bank can translate client inflows, profit and regulatory requirements into a rising return.

Elsewhere, UBS reported on 2 November that its stake in Bang & Olufsen had fallen below five percent, at 4.66% of shares and voting rights. On Tuesday the bank also published its 2027 salary survey of just under 400 Swiss companies, whose findings point to a restrained round of wage increases despite brighter economic prospects.
