Vanguard's All-World ETF Grinds Higher as Washington Gridlock Trumps AI Spending Worries
Published on 11/04/2026 at 22:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation (ISIN IE00BK5BQT80) changed hands at 168.74 euros on Wednesday, a gain of 0.4%, as investors weighed a bruising stretch for technology shares against the relief of a divided US Congress.
That advance follows a week of sharp swings driven by political uncertainty in Washington and mounting questions over whether the enormous AI budgets of the largest technology companies will ever pay off. The MSCI All-World index initially sank after the US midterm results as traders braced for tighter oversight of the AI sector — the very engine of the market's recent growth. By the end of the session, however, the mood had flipped: a split Congress makes sweeping legislation far harder to pass, and the indices turned positive.
A Week of Crosscurrents From Seoul to Silicon Valley
The rebound caps a turbulent run. On Monday, selling in Asian technology names had already rattled markets, with the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan shedding 1.4%, led by losses in Korea and Taiwan. Bank of America analysts pointed to persistent capital outflows from both markets, a signal of doubt about how long the current technology cycle can last.
The root of the anxiety traces back to late October, when the MSCI World index tumbled 1.5% in a single Friday session after a fierce selloff in US tech raised doubts about the returns on the industry's AI spending. Nvidia and AMD both came under pressure. A day earlier, Alphabet had disclosed sharply higher cash outlays for AI investments, sending its shares sharply lower and deepening concern across Big Tech about the scale and payback timeline of those commitments.
Apple and Amazon Add to the Mix
Quarterly reports from two more index heavyweights kept nerves frayed. Apple cautioned that rising memory-chip prices will weigh on gross margins in the current holiday quarter, though it said it has already taken steps to shore up its supply chain. Amazon, meanwhile, guided fourth-quarter revenue largely below Wall Street expectations. Both rank among the largest holdings in the global ETF, so their setbacks feed straight through to the fund.
Microsoft offered a brighter picture. The software group posted 48% growth in its Azure cloud unit for its first fiscal quarter and free cash flow of $18.6 billion — but capital expenditure climbed to $45.2 billion over the same period, a reminder of how expensive the build-out of AI infrastructure remains for the sector.
Nvidia's November 17 Report Looms Large
Attention now shifts to Nvidia, which has confirmed November 17 as the date for its quarterly results covering the third quarter of fiscal 2027. Given the chipmaker's weighting in the index, the release is likely to set the tone for the fund's overall direction once again.
The mixed signals help explain the ETF's recent sideways drift. It sits 1.7% lower over the past seven trading sessions and down 2.6% on the month. At 168.74 euros it trades just below its 50-day average of 169.38 euros, while the 200-day line at 159.99 euros points to an intact longer-term uptrend. The shares are 3.0% shy of their 52-week high of 174.00 euros, touched on October 7.
Retail Buyers Stay Loyal
Whatever the macro noise, private investors keep piling in. According to UK broker Interactive Investor, the accumulating share class ranked second among the most-bought ETFs on its platform in October — unchanged from the prior month. The figures cover single purchases by the platform's clients only, not fund-wide flows or savings plans.
The longer view remains firmly positive: the ETF is up 16% year to date and 17% over twelve months. Set against those gains, the present soft patch looks modest. The coming weeks will show whether worries about the profitability of AI spending harden — or whether the political calm in Washington steadies the market.
