Europe's most heavily bought exchange-traded fund last month kept its footing just below record territory, even as a fresh inflation scare rippled through the technology names that carry the heaviest weight in global benchmarks.

The Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation (ISIN IE00BK5BQT80) changed hands at EUR 170.12 on Thursday, down 0.9% from the previous close and roughly 2.2% beneath the all-time high it notched in early October. A separate reading put the fund at EUR 170.24, also 2.2% below its 52-week peak of EUR 174.00 reached on 7 October. Year to date, the strategy remains up 17%.

Record September, but mind the share classes

LSEG Lipper data show the fund pulled in a net EUR 2.7 billion during September — the strongest monthly tally of any ETF in Europe. That figure covers the entire fund rather than the accumulating share class alone. A parallel Ultumus report, tracking the VWRA trading line under which the product lists on several exchanges, logged net inflows of about USD 2.91 billion for the same month. The two numbers rest on different reporting scopes and cannot simply be added together, though both point the same way.

Investors should also be careful not to lump in other headline figures circulating alongside these. The USD 3.07 billion of September net inflows that ETFGI attributes to the London-listed distributing version concerns a different share class and does not apply to IE00BK5BQT80. Nor should the EUR 2.7 billion cited by Börsen-Zeitung from Amundi's September flow monitor — which is not tied to any specific share class — be mixed into the accumulating line's numbers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation?

More recent weekly data reinforce the pattern: EUR 801.4 million of net money flowed into the accumulating class during the week of 5–9 October, according to Trackinsight figures reported by ETF Express.

Inflation print reignites rate worries

The backdrop turned choppier after a hotter-than-expected US inflation reading for September, reported by Reuters and AP. Technology stocks bearing heavy index weight came under particular pressure, with the prospect of higher financing costs casting doubt over spending on AI infrastructure.

Asian markets weakened on Wednesday and Thursday as the inflation data revived rate concerns, with Reuters identifying tech weakness as the main driver of the selloff. AP described Wednesday's US session as the weakest since July — a sign of how broadly the selling spread.

Because the Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF mirrors nearly the entire investable global equity universe, that tech slump feeds straight into its price, despite hundreds of other holdings from around the world sitting in the index.

Steady demand meets a modest pullback

What stands out is the timing: September's record inflows coincided with the first stirrings of those rate worries. Savers and institutional buyers appear to be treating the volatility in tech and AI names as noise rather than a reason to trim exposure to globally diversified index funds. Broad sector and regional spread, combined with low costs, keeps products like this one appealing precisely when markets turn uncertain.

The mix of resilient inflows and a shallow price dip suggests both professional and retail investors read the recent setback as a breather rather than a change of direction. Whether US rate expectations tighten further — and whether pressure on tech and AI shares persists — will likely shape the fund's near-term path, given the sector's outsized share of global index market capitalization. For now, the flow side of the story looks structurally solid.
