Volkswagen's preferred shares closed Thursday at €69.84, down 2.5%, as a global selloff in AI and semiconductor names weighed on the German equity market and counted the carmaker among its casualties. The decline came on a day when the company's financing arm was also busy raising fresh capital, and it capped a month in which the group disclosed a heavy quarterly loss, paused work on a flagship electric model, and lined up a new technology partner.

The Wolfsburg-based manufacturer reported a loss after tax of roughly €5.8 billion for the third quarter of 2026 on 29 October. Management pointed to US tariffs, a contracting Chinese market and intensifying competition in Europe as the drags on performance, and described the nine-month figures as grounds for immediate action. Cost reduction is now an explicit priority, with wage talks with IG Metall scheduled to open on 24 November in Emden and resume on 15 December in Zwickau.

Electric Golf Work Suspended

Among the operational casualties is the fully electric Golf. Reuters reported on 30 October that Volkswagen has halted development work on the battery-powered model at its Wolfsburg plant — a pause at the group's home base that underscores how far the retrenchment reaches.

On the technology side, the group is leaning on outside expertise. A strategic partnership agreed with NXP Semiconductors on 26 October will see NXP microcontrollers embedded in Volkswagen's software-defined vehicle architecture, with the first car built on that platform slated for 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?

Logistics has produced one completed initiative. Volkswagen said on 28 October that it had wrapped up its "AutoLog" innovation project, run with Deutsche Telekom, Unikie and BIBA on automated vehicle handling at the port of Emden, with funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport.

€1.95 Billion in Green Hybrid Paper

Funding needs were addressed through Volkswagen International Finance N.V., which raised a total of €1.95 billion via two subordinated green hybrid bonds, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The issuance sits alongside investment plans at Audi and the broad restructuring that Bernstein Research highlighted in its assessment.

Audi, the group's premium subsidiary, has secured state subsidies and tax incentives for a planned $4 billion plant in Georgia, according to Reuters, and is examining a second expansion phase. The factory remains a project under construction, with any enlargement still at the review stage.

Bernstein Research resumed coverage of Volkswagen on Thursday. Analyst Harry Martin assigned a "Market-Perform" rating and an €80 price target, citing the scale of the restructuring along with spending on products and local manufacturing.

Courtroom Developments

Legal matters also surfaced during the week. dpa-AFX reports highlighted an arrest warrant issued against a defendant in the VW diesel trial, though the coverage did not establish a causal link to the share price decline. The Braunschweig regional court issued the warrant against a 66-year-old defendant after the second day of proceedings, as reported by Tagesschau; the man has lodged a complaint against the decision. The trial reporting therefore cannot be classified as a confirmed trigger for Friday's drop.

Separately, the Braunschweig labour court ordered Volkswagen to pay roughly €300,000 to a former manager, according to media reports.
