Vulcan Energy's equity came under renewed selling pressure to kick off the trading week, with the stock shedding 2.7% to change hands at EUR 1.06 on Monday. No fresh company announcement explained the move. Instead, the retreat extends a slide that has been grinding the shares lower for weeks, leaving the quote hovering just above its 52-week low of EUR 1.04.

A sector-wide chill rather than a company-specific problem

Much of the pressure traces back to the global lithium complex. A pronounced wave of selling swept through Chinese lithium contracts, with futures retreating roughly a quarter over the course of September. Behind that slump sits mounting doubt among market participants over whether the breakneck capacity expansion of the worldwide battery industry can actually be absorbed by end demand.

When expectations for future raw-material consumption cool, the chill reaches beyond established producers and into aspiring project developers as well. For Vulcan Energy, that broader trend represents a tangible hurdle, since its future marketing prospects are tightly bound to global pricing and to orders from battery manufacturers.

Extraction rates of up to 95% — and a possible licensing business

Operational news has nonetheless kept coming. On Wednesday, the German Geothermal Association (Bundesverband Geothermie) reported on the company's test runs at its Landau and Frankfurt-Höchst sites, where lithium extraction rates of as much as 95% were achieved. The association also said Vulcan Energy is holding talks about licensing the technology to third parties.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Such arrangements could broaden the company's revenue base rather than confining the technology to its own projects. The reported extraction figures also underscore how far the process has matured. Yet none of this managed to turn market sentiment durably.

VULSORB production underway, Lionheart targeted for 2028

Commercial output of Vulcan Energy's in-house adsorbent material VULSORB began roughly two weeks ago in Germany, and the shares have lost 22.3% since. The material is destined to fill the extraction columns at the Lionheart project, which the company aims to bring on stream in the second half of 2028.

Earlier milestones proved equally powerless to halt the decline. A little over three weeks ago, Vulcan Energy secured the Ilka license for lithium extraction — and the stock gave up a further 26.1%. Around the same time, a leadership change on the supervisory board was accompanied by a 29.3% drop. The steady drumbeat of technical progress and personnel reshuffles has thus failed to dispel investor skepticism, with the long stretch until production start and the subdued market backdrop overshadowing the engineering wins.

Founder's stake slips below the 2% mark

Company-specific signals have added to the broader gloom. A mandatory disclosure showed significant share sales by Francis Wedin, cutting his total voting rights from 4.00% to 1.98%. The statutory reporting threshold was crossed on September 24.

A punishing year for the stock

Roughly a month ago, attention centered on financing and construction of the Lionheart project; since then, the quote has given up 34.2%. Year to date, the shares are down 58%. Absent fresh corporate news or supportive impulses from the sector, selling pressure on the raw-materials name looks set to persist — and as long as uncertainty over global battery demand lingers, the stock lacks a firm floor against the industry-wide tide.
