Shops that fuse metal for a living are being pushed to rethink how they protect the people doing the work. Where welding and grinding take place, airborne hazards rarely arrive one at a time — volatile compounds, particle-heavy dust and process gases can all be present in the same space. That mix forces employers to build layered safety strategies, spanning everything from personal protective gear and extraction systems to the machinery itself.

Certified breathing gear for explosive atmospheres

Respiratory protection sits at the centre of that effort, particularly when the equipment must be cleared for areas where explosions are a risk. Since 5 February 2025, the e3000X powered air-purifying respirator from manufacturer optrel has held certification for ATEX zones 2 and 21. The rating confirms the system can be used in workplaces where flammable gases, vapours or dusts may be released briefly.

Alongside that approval, optrel offers an A2P combination filter for its swiss air respirator, delivering protection against certain gases and particles. The company's sphereX model, meanwhile, picked up the Red Dot Award 2026.

Extraction rules tighten around laser welding

Technical safeguards come into play on the shop floor as well. TBH GmbH points out that automated laser welding of high-alloy CrNi steels generates fume containing carcinogenic components. For these laser beam welding processes, the technical rule for hazardous substances TRGS 528 applies in full.

When cleaned air is to be returned to the working area, the regulatory framework requires W3 systems tested to DIN EN ISO 21904. To meet these industrial demands, TBH GmbH has developed filter and extraction units in its TFS series for industrial laser applications.

New joining cells and torches target higher output

Rising health-protection requirements are arriving alongside a push toward more automated, more capable welding equipment. TRUMPF has announced the TruLaser Weld 3000 for the EuroBLECH 2026 trade fair.

The compact robotic laser welding cell relies on AI-assisted programming called TeachLine AI, which cuts programming and setup time by 50 percent, while the welding optics have been shrunk by roughly 40 percent.

The cell occupies a footprint of 3.65 by 3.65 metres, making it about 24 percent smaller than the smallest version of the TruLaser Weld 5000. Fitted with a 3 or 4 kW laser, the unit handles stainless and structural steel up to 8 millimetres and aluminium up to 6 millimetres.

In manual and semi-automatic arc technology, Lorch Schweißtechnik is extending its iQS series with a push-pull function. The system drives welding torches that carry their own wire feed motor and supports torch hose packages up to 8 metres long.

Matching that addition, the range now includes new Powermaster Pro torches of the LMG-PP and LMW-PP types with a Lorch central connection and CanBus link. In the water-cooled version, they are rated for currents up to 450 amperes at a 100 percent duty cycle under mixed gas.

Plastics welding gets its own showcase

For plastics, Evosys Laser will present the EvoWeld Generation 2 and the Evo2Step process for absorbing plastics at the Fakuma trade fair in Friedrichshafen, running from 12 to 16 October 2026 (Hall A4, Stand 4306). The company will also show the Evo 0800-TD process module as a dual-station unit handling two assemblies per cycle, plus a new absorption testing device for measurements along the weld contour.
