Wienerberger has trimmed its full-year 2026 operating profit forecast, and the sell-side has responded in kind. The Austrian building materials group now expects operating EBITDA of EUR 640 million to EUR 650 million for the year, a downgrade that has prompted a wave of target-price revisions and a fresh coverage launch — all pointing to a sector still waiting for a housing recovery that has yet to materialize.

The revised guidance follows what the company describes as persistently weak demand in residential construction, most acutely in the UK and North America. Since late August, Wienerberger has also absorbed sharp increases in raw material, energy, and logistics costs. For the third quarter, the group guided toward revenue of approximately EUR 1.2 billion to EUR 1.3 billion and operating EBITDA of roughly EUR 170 million to EUR 180 million.

The downgrade did not come out of nowhere. According to APA news agency reports, Wienerberger had originally targeted operating EBITDA above EUR 800 million before adjusting that figure to around EUR 700 million in July. The latest cut marks the second reduction in less than four months.

Analysts Adjust Their Marks

The response from research houses has been swift and broadly cautious. On October 9, Berenberg analyst Harry Goad lowered his price target to EUR 19 from EUR 25 while maintaining a "Buy" rating, citing elevated mortgage rates and stubborn inflation as persistent headwinds. Other sector watchers have reportedly followed suit with their own downward revisions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?

Jefferies opened coverage of the stock on Tuesday with a "Hold" rating and a EUR 16 price target, signaling limited near-term upside. The shares closed Tuesday at EUR 15.30, leaving them just 1.8% above their 52-week low of EUR 15.03. The cautious stance from Jefferies mirrors a broader mood across European construction equities.

The Vienna Privatbank had already moved a day earlier, keeping its "Halten" rating but slashing its target to EUR 16.40 from EUR 23.10. Both houses now place fair value only marginally above where the stock currently trades.

UBS Trims Its Holding

Away from analyst actions, Wienerberger's shareholder register showed a modest shift. A regulatory filing revealed that Swiss banking giant UBS reduced its position in voting rights and financial instruments to 3.96% as of October 8, down from a previously reported 4.09%.

The stock has gained 1.7% today to EUR 15.56, though it remains down 49% year-to-date — a decline that underscores how far sentiment has fallen from the sector's pandemic-era highs.

Cost Cuts and a Portfolio Review

Wienerberger is not standing still. Management has pledged to accelerate existing cost-reduction programs and has launched a comprehensive strategic review of its business activities. Details on the scope of these measures and the expected savings are slated for the coming weeks.

The market will get its fullest picture on November 12, 2026, when the company releases detailed results for the first nine months of the year and updates investors on both the cost programs and the strategic portfolio review. Until then, attention will focus on whether the belt-tightening already underway is enough to defend margins in a market that shows few signs of turning.
