Money kept flowing into the iShares MSCI World ETF even as a technology-led rout rattled global equities, with the fund attracting $685 million in net inflows over the past five trading sessions. The buying came during one of the more turbulent stretches for AI-related stocks this year, suggesting many investors treated the dip as an entry point rather than a warning sign.

The fund's price action tells the other half of the story. The ETF shed 2.4% over the week and 4.3% over the month, closing Friday at $199.67 — 5.8% below its 52-week high of $211.94. Despite that pullback, the fund remains up 8.2% year to date and 10% over the trailing twelve months.

Politics, Financing Costs and Stretched Valuations

The selloff had multiple triggers. Investors fretted that Democratic election wins could usher in tighter regulation of artificial intelligence in the US, potentially slowing the buildout of data centers. Doubts about the hefty capital costs of those facilities and their future profitability added to the unease, while critics argued valuations had simply run too far. AP grouped the anxiety around three factors: a possible slowdown in data-center expansion after the election results, elevated financing costs and stretched multiples.

The MSCI All-World Index dropped 0.68% on Thursday, having already tumbled 3.1% the previous day. Friday brought a partial rebound in US tech names — Nvidia climbed nearly 3% after sharp losses, with AMD, Intel and Micron also recovering — though European and Asian markets stayed in the red.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying iShares MSCI World ETF?

Hotter-than-expected US labor data piled on more pressure. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000, beating forecasts, while wages advanced 3.1%. According to Reuters, the figures pushed the yield on ten-year US Treasuries to 4.86%.

A Broader Appetite for Equities

The iShares fund's inflows fit a wider pattern. Global equity funds recorded $38.63 billion in net purchases in the week through November 4, according to Reuters — the seventh consecutive week of inflows and the largest haul since late September. US equity funds alone drew $14.81 billion. Those figures cover the entire fund market rather than the iShares ETF specifically, but they underscore that investors are staying with stocks through the turmoil.

Other data points in the same direction. The Investment Company Institute estimated net inflows of $7.029 billion into US-listed "World" equity ETFs in the week through October 28, down from $7.540 billion the prior week — again a category-wide figure. State Street Investment Management reported renewed preference for US equities in October alongside strong demand for technology and energy names. FactSet put October inflows into US-listed ETFs at $204.2 billion overall, including $126 billion into equity ETFs, with growth-oriented sectors such as technology and energy leading the way.

The November 11 Date on the Calendar

Investors now have a second date to watch. MSCI will publish the results of its November index review on November 11, with any changes to the covered benchmarks — including the MSCI Global Standard Indexes — taking effect at the close on November 30. Which names will be affected has not yet been disclosed. Such periodic reviews determine which companies join or leave the underlying indices and can therefore reshape the ETF's portfolio composition.

For holders, the picture is mixed. Steady inflows signal confidence in the World Index's broad diversification, while rate worries and the debate over AI valuations continue to cap short-term performance. The looming index review is likely to generate additional movement in the weeks ahead.
