XRP's $1 Floor Faces a Triple Test: Bridge Exploit, Record Leverage, and Fed Jitters

The XRP token is clinging to the psychologically critical $1 mark, but the forces gathering around that level are anything but stable. After closing at roughly $1.00 — its weakest daily settlement since November 2024 — the cryptocurrency finds itself caught between a security breach, an unusually crowded derivatives market, and a macro calendar that could trigger the next big move.
A Bridge Breach Shakes Confidence
The immediate catalyst for the current unease came on August 9, when attackers exploited a vulnerability in the deposit-detection software of a bridge connecting the XRP Ledger to the Coreum chain. Roughly 200,000 XRP, worth about $202,000, was drained in 94 separate transactions over a 97-minute window. According to Altcoin Buzz, the perpetrators managed to siphon off 99.7 percent of the bridge's reserve.
Crucially, the XRP Ledger itself was never compromised — the breach was confined to the external bridge software. Coreum, the operator, has since halted the bridge and notified the FBI. While the dollar figure is modest by crypto standards, the incident has added fresh weight to a chart that was already under pressure. XRP now trades below all major moving averages, with the 50-day average of $1.08 sitting comfortably above the current price — a configuration that typically signals continued downside momentum. Daily trading volume has drifted to $885 million, suggesting tepid participation.
Derivatives Traders Pile In While Spot Goes Quiet
What makes the current setup particularly unusual is the divergence between the calm spot market and a rapidly heating derivatives book. Open interest in XRP futures has surged to 2.67 billion XRP — roughly $2.73 billion — the highest level since October. That marks a notable jump from 2.25 billion XRP at the start of August.
Binance tells a similar story. Open interest on the exchange climbed to 435.1 million tokens, well above its 30-day average, with the 30-day Z-score reaching approximately 1.20 — a statistical indicator of significantly elevated speculative activity.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
The catch: the spot price has barely moved for days, oscillating in a tight band between $1.00 and $1.02. That disconnect between a stagnant cash market and an overloaded futures book raises the risk of sharp liquidation cascades once volatility returns. Analysts describe the setup as neutral-to-cautious — traders are clearly positioning for a large move, but the direction remains anyone's guess.
Network Activity Tells a Different Story
Beneath the surface, the network itself is showing signs of life. Active addresses on the XRP Ledger averaged roughly 35,700 per day in August, up from about 26,400 in July. New address creation, however, has stayed nearly flat at around 2,260 per day — suggesting existing users are becoming more engaged rather than a wave of fresh entrants arriving. This gap between rising network usage and a falling price makes the current situation particularly difficult to read.
The Macro Catalyst Looms
The buildup in leveraged positions coincides with a key macro event: the upcoming US inflation report. July's Consumer Price Index came in at 3.4 percent year-over-year, and market participants are pricing a 38 to 42 percent probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September, depending on the source. Tighter monetary policy tends to weigh on risk assets broadly, and cryptocurrencies are no exception.
The technical picture reinforces the caution. XRP sits roughly 70 percent below its August 2025 record high of $3.35. The token briefly dipped to 99 cents on Tuesday before recovering toward $1.02, but that bounce has since faded. The price now stands 7.2 percent below the 50-day average and a full 23 percent beneath the 200-day average. The Relative Strength Index reads 35.5 — suggesting mildly oversold conditions without reaching extremes.
Institutional Moves Offer a Counterweight
Not all the news is bearish. Aviva Investors has launched a tokenized fund worth $1.23 billion on the XRP Ledger, a meaningful vote of confidence in the underlying infrastructure from the institutional world. Separately, Evernorth has revised the terms of a planned share issuance ahead of its Nasdaq listing under the ticker XRPN. The offering will now be priced based on XRP's volume-weighted average price rather than a fixed value of $2.36, a change approved by more than 95 percent of the participating capital.
A Market Caught Between Two Forces
For investors, the picture is genuinely mixed. The bridge exploit does not directly threaten XRP's core infrastructure, but it amplifies an already fragile technical position. Institutional projects like the Aviva fund provide long-term validation for the ledger's utility, yet they are unlikely to defend the $1 level on their own while macro uncertainty around Fed policy persists.
With falling moving averages, open interest at multi-month highs, and a growing base of active existing users, the stage is set for a decisive move. Whether the dollar line holds or breaks will likely be determined in the coming trading sessions — with the inflation report serving as the probable trigger.
