XRP's Institutional Push Accelerates, But Token Economics Keep the Price in a Holding Pattern

Ripple backs ZILO and Licuido to expand XRP Ledger in tokenized markets, but XRP's real-world asset footprint remains small amid monthly token unlocks.

Ripple's latest investments underscore a widening gap between the company's infrastructure ambitions and the market's tepid response to XRP itself. The blockchain firm announced Monday that it has taken strategic stakes in two British fintechs—ZILO and Licuido—as part of a broader effort to deepen the XRP Ledger's footprint in tokenized capital markets. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

ZILO brings transfer agency and fund administration software to the table, technology already deployed by State Street, Citi, and Fidelity International. The London-based company has raised roughly $58.7 million in financing to date, according to industry figures. Licuido, meanwhile, operates as an FCA-regulated platform that tokenizes traditional fund units and enables their use as digital collateral, with Licuido Markets itself operating under the license of Sapeno Partners LLP. Ripple's SVP of Trading & Markets, Nigel Khakoo, framed tokenization as merely the opening move, arguing that the real value emerges when these assets are deployed as collateral. ZILO CEO Phil Goffin echoed that sentiment, describing the future of fund administration as a seamless blend of traditional and digital assets.

The investments build on an existing constellation of institutional partnerships. Aviva Investors launched a tokenized share class of its US dollar liquidity fund on the XRPL on July 29—the first tokenized fund of its kind approved on a public blockchain, following clearance from the Central Bank of Ireland. The RLUSD stablecoin serves as the regulated cash leg for delivery-versus-payment settlements in these structures. Ripple is also participating in a UK initiative to tokenize repos, bonds, and funds, a project outlined in a Treasury report under Chris Woolard that envisions a hybrid model combining regulated networks with public blockchains. Santander UK already uses Ripple's infrastructure for cross-border payments, and a partnership with DXC Technology integrates Ripple's custody and payment solutions into a core banking platform serving more than 300 million accounts.

The network's scale is not in question. The XRPL has processed over four billion transactions since 2012, counts roughly seven million active wallets, and is operated by 120 validators. Yet its position in the tokenized assets hierarchy remains modest: approximately $368 million in tokenized real-world assets places it eleventh among blockchains in that segment, a distant figure next to Ethereum's $17 billion-plus.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

A Familiar Token Release and a Cooling ETF Story

Supply dynamics are adding their own pressure. Ripple released one billion XRP from escrow on August 1, distributed across three tranches, in its routine monthly unlock. Roughly 700 million tokens were promptly re-locked, leaving a net 300 million XRP entering circulation. Ripple CTO David Schwartz noted the company still holds around 32.9 billion XRP in escrow, which at the current release pace could last until roughly 2035 or 2036, though he declined to pin down an exact date.

Demand signals are mixed at best. US spot ETFs on XRP have now recorded net inflows for four consecutive months, accumulating roughly $1.5 billion since launch with net assets of just under $989 million. But the momentum is clearly decelerating: inflows have tapered from $131.94 million in May to $59.46 million in June and just $27.29 million in July. Fabian Dori of Sygnum Bank still reads the persistent inflows as evidence of growing institutional adoption, but the trend line tells a more cautious story.

Price Action Remains Stubbornly Rangebound

The market's response to Monday's announcements was muted. XRP traded at $1.08, up 1.92 percent on the day, yet the token remains 20.18 percent below its 200-day moving average on a twelve-month view. The picture looks even starker against other benchmarks: XRP sits 43.15 percent below its level at the start of the year and 68.37 percent off its 52-week high of $3.37, reached last August. The relative strength index reads 43.1, indicating a neutral-to-slightly-weak market posture without a clear directional bias.

A technical catalyst may be on the horizon. The network is preparing the xrpld 3.3.0 upgrade, which RippleX product chief Reece Cooper said could be activated this week. Five new features—including Confidential MPT, batch transactions, delegated permissions, and sponsored fees and reserves—are designed with institutional use cases like tokenized assets and compliance in mind. Activation requires approval from 80 percent of validators over a two-week period.

XRP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The structural question hanging over XRP remains unresolved: the settlement flows in these new institutional structures run through RLUSD, not XRP itself. The token's role is largely confined to network fees of 0.00001 XRP per transaction. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, speaking at the Consensus 2026 conference, reiterated the importance of establishing XRP as collateral on institutional platforms and reaffirmed his expectation of a multi-chain future rather than a single dominant network. Ripple's own corporate valuation has climbed to roughly $50 billion, and its Ripple Prime unit has connected to the DTCC ecosystem, which processes over $1.2 trillion in daily FICC settlement volume.

Whether any of this translates into structural demand for XRP itself is the question investors will be weighing in the weeks ahead, particularly as the network upgrade moves toward activation and the market digests the latest escrow release. For now, the infrastructure story and the token's price performance remain stubbornly out of sync.
