XRP's Supply Arithmetic: Why $1 Billion in ETF Holdings Can't Outweigh Ripple's Monthly Token Tap

The math behind XRP's slide toward its lowest level in nearly two years is becoming brutally simple: institutional demand is growing, but supply growth is growing faster.
The token changed hands near $1.01 on Wednesday, barely above the 52-week low of $0.9929 printed the previous session. That brief dip below the psychologically significant $1 mark — the first since November 2024 — extended a decline that has now erased 45 percent of the token's value since January and 68 percent over the past twelve months.
The ETF gap
Seven US spot-based XRP ETFs now hold roughly 930 million tokens, with combined assets of about $1 billion as of August 11. On paper, that looks like a meaningful chunk of supply locked away from the open market. But the numbers tell a different story.
Those holdings represent just 1.49 percent of the 62.5 billion XRP in circulation. Bitcoin's spot ETFs, by comparison, control 6.10 percent of all BTC — roughly four times the proportion. For XRP funds to match that level, they would need to accumulate approximately 3.8 billion tokens, nearly three billion more than they currently hold.
The pace of accumulation isn't helping either. Monthly net inflows into US XRP ETFs have collapsed from $650 million in November 2025 to just $1 million in August 2026. Weekly inflows cratered by 93 percent to around $1.01 million, a far cry from the days when funds were pulling in over $100 million per week.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
Ripple's monthly release outpaces buyers
The core problem is that Ripple's escrow releases are overwhelming whatever demand the ETFs generate.
Since December 2017, Ripple has unlocked one billion XRP on the first day of every month. August's release came in three transactions worth roughly $1.08 billion. While about 700 million tokens flow back into new escrow contracts, a net 300 million XRP still enters circulation monthly. At current prices, that requires buyers to absorb roughly $300 million worth of tokens every month just to keep pace.
The ETFs aren't close. Their 2026 average of $43 million in monthly investments is less than one-seventh of what's needed to offset Ripple's net releases.
The funds' performance reflects the strain. The seven ETFs have raised a cumulative $1.51 billion but now hold just $950 million in assets — investors who bought at launch are sitting on average losses of about a third. Bitwise leads the pack with $302.39 million under management, followed by Franklin Templeton's XRPZ at $244.54 million and Canary's XRPC at $236.64 million. 21Shares holds $110.39 million and Grayscale $56.08 million.
Grayscale's fund has seen particularly heavy redemptions: it held 122.23 million tokens at the end of 2025 but only 55.04 million by late June, with 103.41 million tokens redeemed against just 36.27 million in new deposits.
Whales move against the tide
While institutional money retreats, large holders are quietly accumulating. Data from Santiment shows wallets holding more than one million XRP increased by 32 over three months to 2,038 — a multi-month high — even as the token's market capitalization fell 29 percent in the same period.
In the week through August 11, these large holders bought over 380 million XRP, with 81 percent of Binance outflows landing in self-custody wallets. Glassnode data confirms the uptick in activity: active addresses rose from roughly 35,000 to 43,500, while daily transactions jumped from 360,000 to 490,000.
Futures markets show a similar divergence. Open interest on Binance swung from a 13 percent decline in early August to a 7.4 percent increase, with total open interest rising by around $400 million — or 188 million XRP — within a week. The long-short ratio sits at 45.7 percent long, suggesting traders are cautious but positioning for a potential sharp move. Analyst CryptoInsightUK views the open interest buildup as a possible precursor to heightened volatility.
The technical picture remains bearish. XRP trades 6.7 percent below its 50-day moving average of $1.08 and 23 percent under the 200-day average of $1.31. The relative strength index of 35.1 points to conditions approaching oversold territory.
Washington's clock is ticking
The most significant catalyst on the horizon is the CLARITY Act, legislation that would codify US crypto rules and permanently settle XRP's legal status. The Senate postponed a vote without taking action, with a cloture vote now scheduled for September 15. The measure needs 60 votes to advance; with only 53 Republican seats, at least seven Democratic votes would be required. Galaxy Research has cut its probability of passage from 50 to 30 percent.
XRP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Should the bill pass, JPMorgan and Standard Chartered estimate XRP ETFs could see inflows of up to $8 billion within a year — roughly $667 million monthly, more than double Ripple's net monthly release. That pace could meaningfully tighten available supply over an extended period.
Until then, the market faces a supply overhang that institutional demand alone hasn't been able to counter. The realized average price of $0.75, according to Cryptoquant, leaves short-term holders in profit, but the gap between that level and the current price is narrowing.
Headwinds and bright spots
The token's slide has been compounded by external pressures. A security incident involving a faulty bridge resulted in the theft of nearly 200,000 XRP, with an FBI investigation underway. The vulnerability lay in the verification logic of third-party bridge software rather than the XRP Ledger protocol itself.
There are pockets of positive news. Aviva Investors, through Ripple's infrastructure, launched a tokenized share class of its US dollar liquidity fund — with $1.23 billion in assets under management — on the XRP Ledger, approved by the Central Bank of Ireland. Ripple also voted in favor of the fixCleanup proposal, which upgrades the ledger to version 3.3.0 with improvements for Single Asset Vaults and the lending protocol.
For now, XRP's near-term direction hinges less on the steady but insufficient drip of institutional buying and more on the September vote in Washington — and whether the whales accumulating on the way down turn out to be early or wrong.
