XRP's Supply Squeeze Meets Its Stubbornest Season: Why the Token Can't Break Free

Ripple just pulled its most aggressive supply maneuver in recent memory — and the market barely blinked. That tells you everything about the headwinds XRP is facing right now.
On August 1, the company executed its monthly escrow unlock with an unusual twist. Instead of the standard one billion XRP release, Ripple first routed 700 million tokens back into escrow across two separate transactions — 200 million and 500 million — leaving a net circulation increase of just 300 million XRP. It's a deliberate tightening of the supply valve, a preemptive strike against a potential glut that has defined XRP's tokenomics since Ripple originally locked 55 billion XRP into monthly release contracts, with unused tokens automatically returning to escrow.
The market's response was telling: a brief price floor, a modest uptick, then stagnation. XRP now trades at $1.08, barely above its 52-week low of $1.01 from June. The 200-day moving average sits at $1.35 — roughly 20 percent above current levels — underscoring that the medium-term trend remains firmly downward.
An August Curse That Won't Quit
The supply squeeze is colliding with one of the most reliable seasonal patterns in crypto. August has historically delivered XRP holders an average gain of just 0.43 percent — and that figure is flattered by a single 52 percent surge in August 2021 that masks a long run of losing months. The median August return is a far bleaker minus 6.15 percent, and the last four Augusts in a row have closed in the red.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
Historical data suggests that midterm election years in the US are particularly unkind to XRP in August, though September typically brings some relief. Ripple's tighter-than-usual unlock is therefore landing in a month that has repeatedly punished even the most constructive tokenomics news.
Washington Slams the Door — Again
The seasonal drag is compounded by regulatory paralysis. Senator Elizabeth Warren escalated her opposition to the CLARITY Act on August 3, just days after the Senate shelved the legislation on July 27. The bill — which would permanently classify XRP as a commodity and deliver the regulatory clarity institutional investors have been waiting for — now languishes until at least the fall.
That delay is already showing up in the demand side of the equation. Spot XRP ETFs recorded exactly zero inflows on 11 of 22 trading days in July, with the entire month generating just $27.3 million. Compare that to the $666 million those same funds pulled in during their first trading month back in November 2025, and the cooling is unmistakable.
Making matters worse, the provider of a new S&P institutional index dropped XRP from inclusion entirely, citing the network's insufficient protocol revenue. This stings precisely because XRP's technical credentials are solid — transactions settle in 3 to 5 seconds and the network handles roughly 1,500 transactions per second. But index providers care about revenue generation, not raw throughput, and that's where XRP comes up short.
XRP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
A Sector in Waiting
XRP's struggles are playing out against a broader market that's largely treading water. Bitcoin hovers near $63,867 with a flat weekly performance, while Ethereum has shown relative resilience at $1,871.22, buoyed by three consecutive weeks of spot ETF inflows. Cardano, meanwhile, has been the week's outlier, surging 25.18 percent on whale accumulation ahead of a key ETF milestone on August 9.
For XRP specifically, the near-term path hinges on forces largely outside Ripple's control. The escrow maneuver provides a temporary floor, but it's not a catalyst for sustained recovery. The CLARITY Act remains parked in the Senate, the index exclusion stands, and institutional ETF flows show little sign of reviving. Until one of those structural pieces shifts, XRP holders face the uncomfortable reality that their token's fate rests less with Ripple's supply management and more with Washington's legislative calendar and the whims of a historically hostile month.
