XRP traded 3.0% lower on Thursday, caught between a hotter-than-expected US inflation reading and fresh uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's next rate move. The macro backdrop has little to do with the token's own roadmap, yet it is doing much of the work in setting the price — a split that has defined the past week for holders.

The inflation data landed hard. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices rose 3.7% year-on-year in September, with a 0.6% month-on-month increase. Market coverage tied the surprise to renewed rate anxiety, and forced liquidations of leveraged positions reportedly deepened the slide across major cryptocurrencies a day earlier. For XRP, that means separating broad selling pressure from anything happening inside its own network.

A Short-Term Call, Not a Rating Change

CryptoinsightUK sketched a possible slide to $1.22 next week in a podcast on Wednesday, with a deeper scenario spanning $1.15 to $1.18. Those are forecasts, not settled price targets or newly issued rating changes — a distinction worth keeping in view as the market digests the macro shock.

Exchange flow data added another layer of caution. Large XRP holders moved a combined 1.669 billion tokens onto Binance over 30 days, a level CryptoQuant described as the highest in seven months. Deposits can swell the supply available on a trading venue, but they do not by themselves prove that owners have sold. The figure is a signal of potential selling pressure, not evidence of executed trades.

Technical Work Continues Regardless

Even as the tape weakened, the plumbing kept advancing. On Wednesday, reports detailed a Ripple collaboration with Privy, a Stripe-owned company, letting developers embed XRPL wallets directly into their applications. Those wallets support transfers of XRP, RLUSD and other assets on the network.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

Security work moved in parallel. An October 9 disclosure described a flaw that could have enabled the creation of available XRP. RippleX said it found no signs of exploitation on public networks and has shipped a fix.

What Institutions Actually Need

The longer-term question drew fresh attention from Anthony Welfare, a former Ripple CBDC adviser, who laid out what broader institutional adoption of the XRP Ledger requires. His central point: technology alone is not enough.

Liquidity, custody, compliance and the ability to connect disparate systems determine whether financial firms actually deploy the infrastructure. For XRP investors, that shifts the focus toward practical implementation rather than technical capability.

Welfare expects private blockchains to grow first, with parts of that activity potentially migrating to public networks later. That is not a rejection of the XRP Ledger, but it does contradict the assumption that institutional interest must translate immediately into more usage of a public network.

Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz described a similar gap on Wednesday, noting the ledger lacks stronger connections to everyday financial applications. He cited payments, access to assets, and on- and off-ramps between traditional currencies and digital assets. The two comments complement each other: Welfare outlines what institutional users demand, Schwartz the links to daily finance that must exist. The takeaway for investors is a concrete yardstick — new technical possibilities matter less than their integration into usable financial services.

CEO Brad Garlinghouse, meanwhile, has narrowed XRP's role. The token is geared toward payments but does not suit every use case. That limits the claim: XRP need not handle every payment task to serve a function within a payments strategy.

XRP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Evernorth's Plans Come With Conditions

How demanding execution will be is visible in Evernorth's plans. The company intends to deploy its roughly 473 million XRP for institutional strategies in the fourth quarter of 2026, naming Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase and BitGo as partners.

Announced strategies are not the same as available applications. A later phase involving decentralized finance is meant to follow only once validators activate the required credit functions and those have been tested in live operation. Technical activation alone would not yet be full proof of practical usability.

The economics remain unspecified, too: Evernorth has disclosed neither the intended deployment volume nor expected returns or the exact custody split. No particular yield for the XRP holdings can be derived from the partnership announcement.

Welfare's framing sets the bar for the next milestones: durable usage comes from available liquidity, reliable custody and working financial applications. For XRP holders, concrete execution steps will count for more than the mere prospect of institutional involvement — particularly while inflation and exchange inflows keep the near-term picture under pressure.
