Hydrogen pilot plant expanded
In a press release dated October 2, 2026, VERBUND and voestalpine said they had launched an expanded H2FUTURE hydrogen pilot plant at voestalpine’s Linz site. The expansion adds a compression and purification unit and five hydrogen storage tanks, with costs of EUR 16.4 million.
The project will research the production, compression, purification, storage, loading and further use of green hydrogen. VERBUND said the first functional tests had begun, with initial research results expected by the end of 2026 and the project scheduled to run through December 2030. The companies’ broader framework agreement, described in a separate company release, covers energy supply, hydrogen, battery storage, renewable-energy expansion and flexibility marketing through the end of 2029.
