Barrick Mining is navigating a stark contrast between soaring gold prices and its weakest production in a generation. As the precious metal trades near $4,800 per ounce, the company’s output has slumped to a 25-year low. This divergence sets the stage for a pivotal month of May, where quarterly results and a major corporate restructuring will test the miner’s strategy.

The financial windfall from current market conditions is undeniable. Each ounce Barrick produces now yields a profit margin approaching 70%, or roughly $3,000, driven by sustained central bank purchases and geopolitical tensions. Analysts at J.P. Morgan see potential for gold to climb toward $5,000 by year-end, far exceeding the company's internal planning price of $4,500 for 2026. Every dollar above that baseline flows directly into free cash flow.

Yet this profitability masks a severe operational challenge. Gold production collapsed by 17% last year to 3.26 million ounces. While the company confirms its annual production targets, achieving them requires a significant rebound. The upcoming first-quarter report on May 11 will provide the first concrete data on whether a planned production ramp-up is on track. Management aims for up to 3.25 million ounces of gold for the full year.

Complicating the growth picture is a slowdown at the Reko Diq copper project in Pakistan. Security concerns have forced Barrick to extend its project review until mid-2027, delaying development and prompting a reassessment of financing and timelines. This postponement hits as the company seeks to bolster its copper portfolio.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Barrick Mining?

Concurrently, Barrick is advancing a bold corporate move: the spin-off of its North American assets into a separate listed entity, dubbed "NewCo." This new company would bundle 64% of Barrick's previous gold production. CEO Mark Hill believes the spin-off will unlock hidden value by reducing the typical conglomerate discount applied to diversified miners. Analysts view the initial public offering as a potential catalyst for the stock.

The operational strength for this split comes primarily from North America, where mines are delivering reliably despite an ongoing legal dispute with Newmont. Production at the Carlin operation surged 25% in the last quarter. This robust performance underpins strong financials; expected operating income is growing by 37%, and operating cash flow is up nearly 42%.

Financially, Barrick enters this period from a position of strength, thanks to a record 2025 where revenue reached nearly $17 billion and profit doubled to around $5 billion. Shareholders are benefiting from a new dividend policy that pays out half of the company's free cash flow. The stock currently trades in a range of C$58 to C$62, with analysts maintaining an average price target of $50.44.

Barrick Mining at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Investors face a packed schedule. A virtual shareholder meeting is set for May 8, followed shortly by the Q1 earnings. These events will reveal if Barrick can manage costs and leverage its high-margin environment to offset historically weak production volumes while steering through a transformative corporate split.
