Amazon is firing on two hardware fronts in a bid to carve out fresh growth engines while tightening its cost structure. On the one hand, the company has reached a critical milestone for its Project Kuiper satellite constellation, positioning it to challenge Starlink in the broadband-from-space arena. On the other, it is plotting a radical overhaul of its consumer device lineup, swapping third?party processors for in?house silicon from 2027.

The Seattle giant announced on 3 July 2026 that it now has enough satellites in orbit to launch a commercial internet service before year?end. An Atlas V rocket operated by the United Launch Alliance lifted off from Cape Canaveral on the night of 1 July, carrying 29 additional satellites and bringing the total active count in Amazon’s low?Earth?orbit constellation to roughly 396. Company officials said that number is sufficient to provide continuous coverage in the initial latitudes, though they acknowledge coverage will be local and limited at the outset. A full?fledged network comparable to established players will take time to build.

Alongside the space push, Amazon is turning its attention to the hardware that sits in millions of homes. Starting in 2027, devices such as Kindle e?readers, Fire TV streaming sticks and Echo smart speakers will run on processors designed internally rather than sourced from external suppliers. The move mirrors the strategy already deployed by Amazon Web Services, which has developed its own chips for use in data centres. To execute the plan, Amazon has enlisted Taiwan?based Alchip for exclusive design and testing of the new parts. Analyst Ming?Chi Kuo estimates the programme could ultimately churn out 40 million chips every year. The goal: slash hardware costs and reduce dependence on third?party vendors, freeing up cash for the company’s capital?intensive artificial?intelligence projects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

In a separate but related shift, Amazon is winding down access to an older service. The Mechanical Turk platform, which allows users to outsource simple tasks such as data labelling for AI training, will close to new customers on 30 July 2026. Existing clients can continue to use it, but no new features will be added beyond security and availability updates.

At the close of trading on Friday, Amazon’s stock stood at €212.50, a modest gain of 0.24% on the day. Over the week the shares rose 4.22%, and they have advanced 9.92% since the start of the year. The 12?month return stands at 11.91%. Still, the stock is trading 10.73% below its record high of €238.05 set on 5 May, though it has clawed back 28.10% from the 52?week low of €165.88 reached in February. The current price sits 3.40% under the 50?day moving average but 6.03% above the 200?day line, signalling moderate strength in the medium?term trend. The relative strength index of 50.5 indicates neither overbought nor oversold conditions. The 30?day annualised volatility of 31.61% is notable but not extreme for a tech stock of Amazon’s heft.

The International Conference on Machine Learning kicks off in Seoul from 6 to 11 July, with Amazon researchers actively participating. Industry reports for July 2026 underline how physical and digital retail are converging, powered by AI?driven tools and personalised shopping experiences. AI?enhanced advertising is also seen as a key growth area for large e?commerce platforms. For Amazon, the satellite infrastructure and the chip?making push represent two parallel bets: one on expanding its reach into space?based connectivity, the other on wringing out costs in its consumer electronics business to fuel the broader AI offensive. How quickly Kuiper scales from a local pilot into a global service will be one of the stories to watch in the months ahead.
