Novo Nordisk’s Semaglutide Data Piles Up, Yet Stock Remains Unmoved

Novo Nordisk reveals new semaglutide data at ADA, including longevity and aesthetic potential, but shares remain under pressure—down 44% over 12 months.

Semaglutide Shows Broader Benefits, Yet Novo Nordisk Stock Struggles

Semaglutide continues to rack up fresh evidence of benefits well beyond weight loss, but Novo Nordisk’s share price is showing little enthusiasm for the avalanche of data. On Monday afternoon, the stock traded at €36.97 in Frankfurt, down 0.80% on the day, leaving it 43.99% lower over the past twelve months. For investors watching presentations at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) conference in New Orleans, the disconnect between clinical progress and market performance is becoming increasingly hard to ignore.

The Danish drugmaker used the ADA meeting to unveil a wave of post-hoc analyses from its SELECT, STEP and OASIS programmes. The data homed in on comorbidities of obesity, with semaglutide linked to fewer asthma-related adverse events, better systolic blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension and obesity, and hints of improvements in obstructive sleep apnoea and systemic cardiovascular inflammation. These findings are strategically important: the broader the clinical utility, the stronger the argument Novo Nordisk can make to payers and healthcare systems.

But the company is thinking even bigger. CEO Mike Doustdar used the conference to open the door to what he called an entry into longevity research and aesthetic medicine. He instructed researchers to identify further indications for future GLP-1 therapies, noting that weight reduction might one day be merely a side effect. When asked directly about investments in skincare or hair-loss treatments, his answer was a simple “yes”. The underlying science is already supportive: new data presented in New Orleans showed that semaglutide can reduce the biological age of the heart and kidneys, leading to a measurable drop in mortality risk—effects that appear independently of weight loss and sometimes before patients shed significant kilograms.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Commercially, Novo Nordisk is also pressing ahead. The Wegovy pill—an oral formulation of semaglutide—cleared three million prescriptions in the United States in just over five months, making it one of the strongest pharmaceutical launches by volume in modern history. The international rollout is scheduled for the second half of 2026, and the United Arab Emirates has already granted marketing approval.

On the manufacturing front, Novo Nordisk signed a memorandum of understanding with the Emirates Drug Establishment on 8 June 2026 to expand pharmaceutical production and supply-chain resilience in the UAE. The deal covers local technology transfer, value-added manufacturing, and workforce training for Emirati students and specialists. It is the clearest signal yet that the company wants to embed itself in a region beyond its core European and North American markets.

None of this is changing the mood on the buy side. Novo Nordisk is ploughing ahead with a 15 billion Danish kroner share buyback programme launched in February. In the latest tranche, it has repurchased 4 million B-shares, including 870,000 shares bought between 1 and 4 June at average prices ranging from 276.91 to 292.91 kroner. The company now holds roughly 0.8% of its own capital. Yet even that has failed to spark conviction.

JPMorgan reiterated a ‘Neutral’ rating on 8 June, citing two offsetting forces: promising new oral formulations versus intensifying pricing pressure and competition in the GLP-1 space. Technically, the stock sits above its 50-day moving average but remains below its 200-day line—a configuration that keeps the chart pattern ambiguous. For Novo Nordisk, a stack of impressive data alone is not yet enough to turn a battered trend.
