A team at the University of Zurich has identified ten biomarkers in saliva that flag severe sleep deprivation, raising the prospect of roadside or workplace exhaustion tests. In a study involving 20 healthy men, a single night without sleep altered roughly ten percent of the biomolecules in their saliva, the researchers reported. The discovery could lead to rapid screening tools for use in traffic or safety-critical jobs, though the method has not yet been validated for everyday application.

Around the same time, scientists led by Yunhao Wen at Columbia University published findings in mid-June 2026 showing a U-shaped link between sleep duration and biological ageing. People who routinely sleep fewer than six hours or more than eight hours accelerate ageing in organs including the heart, brain, lungs, liver and skin. Prolonged deviations from that window also raise the risk of depression, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Neurologist Volker Busch advises winding down with manual activities before bed and steering clear of confrontational conversations late in the evening. He and other sleep specialists stress the importance of consistent routines for healthy rest.

Additional hygiene recommendations include:

  • Light management: Seek 10 to 20 minutes of natural light in the morning. In the evening, reduce blue light from screens 60 to 120 minutes before sleeping.
  • Room climate: Keep the bedroom cool, ideally between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius.
  • Diet and stimulants: Avoid caffeine eight to twelve hours before bedtime. Alcohol and heavily processed, sugary foods also impair sleep quality.

When persistent daytime tiredness, breathing pauses during sleep or loud snoring occur, clinicians recommend a medical workup. For suspected sleep apnoea, an outpatient home test is often sufficient. More complex disorders such as sleepwalking require an in-hospital sleep lab, where patients currently face waiting times of several months to a year.

Meanwhile, two new developments aim to make sleep easier. Amazon announced in June 2026 automated wind-down routines for children’s devices on its Echo line. A German market launch date has not been set. And the biopharmaceutical company Vertanical received approval in June 2026 for a cannabis-based drug targeting chronic neuropathic pain. The medication, positioned as an alternative to opioids, is expected to be available in Germany and Austria starting September 2026.
