Too Tight to Turn: A Failed Rescue Ladder in Cologne Exposes Urban Firefighting Gaps

Firefighters in Cologne’s Severinsviertel neighbourhood faced a grim reality on the evening of June 2: their ladder truck was useless. A four-person family was trapped in a fourth-floor apartment as flames tore through a rooftop unit on the Severinstraße. The truck arrived, but it could not be deployed.
The problem was geometry. Fire brigade spokesperson Ulrich Laschet explained that the vehicle needed a turning radius of roughly 22 metres to operate safely. The narrow street and the building’s layout left no room. Neither the road nor the inner courtyard provided enough space.
Crews set up a rescue cushion as a precaution. In the end, they evacuated the family — mother, father and two children — through a smoke-filled stairwell, equipping each person with a smoke hood. The fire was brought under control about an hour later. The fourth-floor apartment is now uninhabitable.
These fires serve as a stark reminder of how quickly emergencies can escalate when access is limited. Many businesses underestimate the fire safety risks they face every day – and the cost of being unprepared can be severe. Elsewhere that same evening, Dresden-Söbrigen reported a blaze in an attic around 22:12. A family of five, aged ten to 64, managed to escape on their own but were taken to hospital with suspected smoke poisoning. Approximately 80 firefighters responded, saving a cat and providing the animal with oxygen. Authorities warned residents within 500 metres to keep windows and doors shut. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
Earlier on June 2, a roof-truss fire in Marlow-Gresenhorst had drawn 75 emergency personnel. Four people were rescued unhurt. Police estimate property damage at around €300,000. Initial findings point to negligent arson.
Heavy thunderstorms also kept crews busy that day. In Bergisch Gladbach’s Alt-Refrath district, lightning struck a house roof at 17:58. Two residents and two cats escaped injury. Sixty-five firefighters contained the fire by 19:30. A second lightning strike in the city centre damaged a residential building, several vehicles and a tree.
Technical faults and minor accidents occupied fire services through June 3 and 4. In Königswinter-Oberpleis, burnt food on a stove forced the evacuation of 14 residents from a supervised facility. One person was taken to hospital with a suspected internal medical emergency.
Everyday incidents like a forgotten pan on the stove highlight why robust risk documentation matters. Without proper records, it becomes harder to spot hazards and prove compliance. Shortly after midnight on June 4, a fire broke out at a water-ski park in Duisburg-Wedau. Several gas cartridges exploded. Around 45 firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to a neighbouring building and cooled a liquefied-gas tank. No injuries were reported.
Separately, Cologne’s criminal police are investigating an attempted aggravated arson. Around 2:00 on the morning of June 4, unknown individuals set a firebomb outside an ice-cream parlour on the Brühler Straße in Cologne-Raderberg. The glass entrance door shattered, but a major fire did not develop. Witnesses saw two or three people dressed in dark clothing fleeing in a small white vehicle. The criminal investigation unit is asking for tips about the suspects.
