Dundee opens the David Bowie On Tour archive exhibition
The V&A exhibition listing says David Bowie: On Tour brings around 100 highlights to V&A Dundee, with many items never previously displayed in public. The exhibition spans costumes, musical instruments, career-spanning photography, Polaroids from make-up and costume fittings, and handwritten material.
Visitors will also see a Ziggy Stardust-era acoustic guitar, unrealised scripts, performance notes and costumes associated with The Next Day and Blackstar. The presentation is arranged across four sections covering photography, stage and studio work, screen appearances, and Bowie’s working archive.
David Bowie’s archive reflects a career across art forms
David Bowie was a British singer, songwriter and actor whose music moved across glam rock, art rock, electronic music and pop. His official biography traces his path from London music groups to a solo career.
The exhibition makes that range visible without separating music from image and performance. Bowie’s archive is presented through costumes, instruments, photographs, notes and screen-related material, connecting the songs to the visual and theatrical work around them.
Four sections connect Bowie’s music with film and design
Bowie Through a Lens examines photography and identity, while All the Somebody People follows his work onstage and in the studio. Hooked to the Silver Screen turns to music videos, films and television appearances, and I Can’t Give Everything Away considers time, process and legacy.
The show has been developed by V&A Touring and V&A National Programmes with partner venues across the UK. Harriet Reed, the V&A’s curator of contemporary performance, is named as curator.
