- The scenic operator began the Route C arrangement at Tianmen Mountain on 13 October 2026.
- Route C uses the Tianmen Cave Express Cableway and seven-stage mountain-piercing escalator.
- Tianmen Mountain rises to 1,518.6 metres above Zhangjiajie in China.
Tianmen Mountain and its cableway route adjustment affect visits in Zhangjiajie, China, from 13 October 2026. The scenic area has suspended its main cableway passenger service during an upgrade, leaving the round-trip Route C as the published arrangement for visitors.
Route C replaces the main cableway from 13 October
The operator announced the change on 10 October 2026. From 13 October 2026, round-trip Routes A and B, together with one-way Routes 1 and 2, are suspended while the cableway upgrade proceeds. The operator has not announced a reopening date for the affected routes.
The continuing Route C starts at the Mountain Gate. Visitors take the Tianmen Cave Express Cableway up to the cave area, continue towards the summit on the seven-stage mountain-piercing escalator, visit the summit attractions and return by the same transport sequence. The operator’s route adjustment notice says the shuttle between the lower cableway station and the Mountain Gate continues to operate.
The change is a transport restriction rather than a full closure of the mountain. The operator also warns that the West Line Glass Skywalk, East Line Glass Skywalk, Panlong Cliff Glass Skywalk and the Stairway to Heaven at Tianmen Cave may close because of weather, maintenance or events.
Tianmen Mountain’s summit remains linked to Route C
The mountain stands about 8 kilometres south of central Zhangjiajie in Hunan, China. The scenic area’s own listing gives the summit elevation as 1,518.6 metres and identifies the lower cableway station in Guangli Ping, Yongding District, as its base.
That setting explains the practical effect of the October change. Route C reaches the mountain through the cave-side express cableway, while the suspended routes depend on the main cableway connection. Travellers therefore still find Tianmen Cave, the summit viewpoints and the named skywalks within the visitor route, but not the long main-cableway journey described by older guides. A regional report on the route change also describes the arrangement announced for 13 October 2026.
The operator’s notice does not give a completion date for the upgrade. Its current information instead directs visitors to check the route and entry slot for their chosen date, since the reopening of Routes A and B depends on construction progress.
Visiting Tianmen Mountain: what travellers from Western Europe should know

- Routes A and B and one-way Routes 1 and 2 are suspended from 13 October 2026, so older itineraries based on the main cableway do not describe the current arrangement.
- The lower cableway station is in Guangli Ping, Yongding District, and the operator says the shuttle between that station and the Mountain Gate continues to run.
- The route includes Tianmen Cave and access towards the 1,518.6-metre summit by the seven-stage mountain-piercing escalator.
- Entry requirements depend on your nationality; UK travellers can check the FCDO travel advice at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice, Irish travellers the Department of Foreign Affairs at ireland.ie.
