Evonik has commissioned a new specialty-silicone production facility and tank farm at its Essen-Goldschmidtstraße site, a roughly €52 million project the company says will shorten transport routes across its international production network and reduce the risk of bottlenecks. The plant, announced yesterday, sits alongside a broader restructuring story that investors are still trying to price.

Essen is one of Evonik's central silicone hubs, and the new capacity is designed to serve a wide spread of end markets rather than a single outlet. The specialty silicones go into insulation materials, mattresses and car seats, as well as adhesives, paints, coatings and cosmetics. The logistical gains are meant to come from smoother production and transport flows — but the investment sum alone says nothing about the earnings contribution, which depends on whether those operational improvements actually land on the shop floor.

A €52 Million Bet Measured Against an 11% Return Target

Evonik has set itself a return-on-capital-employed target of 11% by 2029, against a Roce of 6.1% in 2025 — a gap that demands substantial improvement. That makes the Essen project a test case for the group's standalone strategy: growth alone won't be enough; the question is how profitably Evonik deploys its capital.

The expansion runs in parallel with a wider overhaul. According to Börsen-Zeitung, Evonik expects a buyer for Oxeno in the coming months, while preparations to sell Synect are also under way. Site investments and planned divestments are therefore separate building blocks of the same corporate development. Meanwhile, the company plans to cut 3,200 jobs worldwide by 2029 — the Essen build-out is no counterweight to the savings drive, but a parallel track of investment at a central production site and cost reduction across the group.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?

Interim chief Claus Rettig reaffirmed the independence claim yesterday. Evonik says it is not conducting takeover talks with BASF but remains open to a confidential, purely informational exchange.

Second-Quarter Momentum, With a Caveat

The operational backdrop improved in the third quarter of 2026, as reported yesterday. Adjusted EBITDA climbed 40% year on year to €629 million, driven by higher sales volumes and prices, plus supply shortages among Asian competitors stemming from the Middle East crisis. Revenue rose 13% to €3.8 billion. Even so, the adjusted EBITDA figure fell just short of the Vara consensus of €633.2 million — strong year-on-year growth, but not a positive surprise against that expectation.

Evonik also sharpened its 2026 guidance to the upper half of its EBITDA range of €2.0 billion to €2.2 billion. The capacity expansion adds a longer-term operational dimension to that earnings outlook.

Analysts Stay Cautious

The analyst verdicts were downbeat nonetheless. JPMorgan kept its "Underweight" rating and €14 price target, with analyst Chetan Udeshi reading the guidance as a signal of a weaker fourth quarter than previously expected. DZ Bank cut its recommendation to "Hold" with an unchanged fair value of €22; analyst Peter Spengler cited limited chances of a higher takeover premium and increased downside risk.

For investors, the distinction between capacity and business performance is what matters: extra production capability creates room to maneuver but does not translate directly into additional revenue or profit. More capacity widens Evonik's options — and the analyst skepticism shows that, on its own, it does not yet add up to a cheaper valuation.
